INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION

As a part of Master of Business degree program, The Thirty Days work experience

program was conducted for studying the practical aspect of organization. The

work experience program gives the opportunity to have a practical knowledge on

every department in the textiles areas. The purpose so internship is to get an

overall knowledge about an organization.

Work experience is an experience that a person gains while working in a

experience is widely used to mean a type of volunteer work that is commonly

intended for young people often students to get a feel for professional working

environments.

Though the placements are usually unpaid, travel and food expenses are

sometime covered, and the end of the appointment a character reference is usually

provided. Trainees usually have the opportunity to network and make contact

among the working personnel, and put themselves forward for forthcoming

opportunities for paid work.

Many employees in the more sought after profession (TV, politics,

journalism) demand that every new entrant undergo a period of unpaid “work

experience” before being able to get paid work.

1
At university level, work experience is often offered between the second and

final year of an undergraduate degree course, especially in the science,

engineering and computing field. Courses of this nature are often called sandwich

course, with the work experience year itself known as the sandwich year. During

this time, the student on work placement has the opportunity to use the skill and

knowledge gained in their first two year, and see how they are applied to real

world problems. This offers them useful insight for their final year and prepares

them for the job market once their course has finished. Some companies sponsor

students in their final year at university with the promise of a job at the end of the

course. This is an incentive for the student to perform well during the placement

as it helps with two otherwise unwelcome stresses: the lack of money in the final

year, and finding a job when the University course ends.

Basic Work Experience Ideas:

Everybody usually has certain ideas regarding work experience. But the basic

concept of work experience is to understand the skill set of the candidate and also

the projects undertaken by him/her in their previous organizations.

2
Work Experience Definition:

The apt definition for a ‘work experience‘ is it is a period of work done in a

particular organization or anything own from which learning can be achieved.

There are different types of work experience which can be listed in your resume

according to the various factors like time period, the role you played. Most

common work experience categories are:

1. Full-time work experience:

Here the person would be employed for a full time in a job role. He/she would be

involved in all the aspects of the job which involves more than a duration of 8 to

10 hours approximately.

These type of work experience are expected in many organizations as the

employee skill level would be higher when compared to others.

2. Part-time work experience:

Here the person would be employed part-time, according to the job role. These

type of work experience are also expected as few organizations might have only a

need of an employee for a few hours.

3
This is common in many types of organizations like textile, and marketing, retail

outlets etc.

3. Work experience in own organizations:

This type of work experience is where an employee owns an entire or part of a

business by himself. This is also needed for few organizations where

more management skills are expected.

This type of work experience is commonly expected in franchise bidding, handling

whole management positions etc.

4. Vacation work experience:

This type of work experience is where most students get to have during the

vacation. Here the person would be employed for a short span of a few months.

Most of the freshers are expected to these type of work experience.

5. Voluntary work experience:

This type of work experience is where the person might not get paid for the job

role player but he gets to know the work. This type of work experience is generally

common between students as they do it as a part of project or internships.

4
This is an added advantage to list in the work experience. Few organizations also

consider this type of work experience too.

Relevant Work Experience Meaning:

Relevant work experience means having work experience related to the job posted.

This has more plus than the generalized work experience as it gives a basic

structure to your resume and highlights your skills set relevant to the job.

For example, if you are applying for a retail outlet job, having a previous

experience in the same retail category is an added advantage. That is more relevant

work experience draws more attention to the recruiters. Some of the basic added

advantages to your resume if you have a relevant work experience are:

1. It makes your resume focused:

There might be many work experiences listed in your resume. Relevant job

experience will give more clarity to your resume and will add more focus to the

interviewer.

5
2. Edge over other resumes posted:

There might be a huge number of resumes posted for a job application. But any

relevant work experience will add an edge over others and more commitment to

the interviewer to review your resume.

3. Chances of getting higher job roles are high:

As when your resume has a relevant work experience, there are many chances that

your resume gets added points and they might also consider your resume for higher

job roles as already you are experienced to the relevant job posted.

Importance of Experience in the Workplace:

Employers usually prefer experienced candidates to fill the vacancies in their

organization. This helps in many ways and the main thing is training which costs

them a lot of time, money and resources. Hiring experienced candidates can also

help the organization in many ways when compared to freshers. help the

organization in many ways when compared to freshers.

1. Young people are more likely to be successful in their job hunt if they have done

some good work experience.

6
2. If you haven’t got a clue what career you want to do, work experience is a

perfect way to sample some possible career options. It’s a way of exploring

different jobs without actually committing to anything

. 3. If you do know what you think you want to do, it’s the best way to get a real

sense of your chosen industry. You’ll get to speak to employees and ask them

questions.

4. Doing work experience shows passion and interest. Evidence that you have

done work experience shows the employer that you are motivated.

5. If you’re not sure and aren’t that bothered about your career or education at the

moment, work experience might just be what you need to motivate you. You might

find something you are passionate about and get motivated.

6. Work experience gently introduces you to the world of work. You get to learn

the dos and don’ts, get to know a work place and learn to cope in a working

environment. It’ll give you an idea of the skills you might need to thrive in the

workplace.

7. It’ll help you identify your own skills and perhaps even highlight the areas that

you might want to work on and definitely give you a good understanding of your

strengths and weakness.

7
8. You might impress them so much that you’ll manage to get yourself a part-time

job.

9. It’ll help you build up contacts and, you never know, they might even give you

a future job or recommend you to another company.

10. And finally, if nothing else, work experience gives you something to put on

your CV

But from the organization’s side, if freshers are recruited, even after training,

employers need to provide some senior assistance before making them work in the

real time. Saying this does not mean that freshers are a complete NO in the

business market. It totally depends upon the requirement of the project in hand and

the need of the organization.

Be it any sector, a perfect candidate to be hired needs to be one who can be the best

combination of right academics and real-time work experience. A good work

experience can help you in the following ways,

 Teaching new and trending things

 Helps you highlight your abilities and skills

 Finding your interest and passion in the work

 Helps in discovering new career paths

8
 Get motivated to work differently and smartly

 Make good networking with people

 Helps you connect with people who can guide you when required.

 Understand how things work

Benefits of Work Experience:

Having a work experience is a big advantage not only to the job seeker but also to

the recruiter in many ways possible. In the present scenario, having a good degree,

many certifications will not help as much a work experience can do to you.

Nowadays, all employers have started to seek a person who has an on-hand

experience for the job role. They believe a person becomes more skilled once he is

exposed to real-life work.

Work experience provides job seeker many benefits, giving you skills and a good

exposure that will allow a person to stand out to potential employers as well as

guiding them to choose the right sector to work in.

Be it a part-time or a full-time work, an experience can gain you many benefits and

make you more exposed to the good talented opportunities around you.

9
Here are few things to be noted which makes a work experience stand out than a

shining degree.

1. Master of soft skills:

A good work experience will enhance the way you communicate, team building

skills, awareness about the industry, enhance leadership ability, and lot more. It

will make you a master of soft skills as you have a good amount of work

experience.

It is generally said that a person with enough amount exposure to work life will

generally develop a strong soft skill ability. And good soft skill ability generally

comes by more exposure to the environment.

2. Makes you more worthy:

Work experience will build your confidence level as much as possible. For

example, it will make you learn how to meet deadlines, basic phone and Email

etiquettes, pressure managing ability, importantly people management, and time

management etc. This will certainly have an impact on you and makes your more

worthy.

10
3. Upgrades your application forms and interviews:

Work experience will surely enhance your application form and also during the

interviews. This also has a great impact on the advantages and disadvantages of a

letter of the application when applying for a particular job.

This is because of real-time knowledge about the sector you have gained

previously in your job. It will also make the interviewer comfortable in explaining

the job role as you have experience in work life before.

4. More option to choose for yourself:

Having work experience will help you to choose the right organization, right

sector, as well as a right shift. This is because a good experience can help you to

choose things which suits your nature.

For example, a person might be interested and more comfortable in working in

night shifts. This can be identified once you have experimented with a particular

shift in your previous organization.

If things are not in your way, a good job experience will make you move in the

right direction as you understand the whole process and your mind has a clarity

about job life.

11
5. A possibility of having better offers:

This is the very good advantage of having work experience as it will help you have

better offers than your previous employment.

For example, a good reputed part-time job done previously will help you to secure

a full-time job as a reward. There is a chance of improvement in your career as you

move with a work experience.

6. Moving the scale personally:

Good work experience will not only make you grow career wise but also it will

help you to scale up personally. It will make you move higher in the scale and

financially it will have a great impact if you have a good work experience.

Generally, having a good work experience will make you move to the better

position in the organization.

7. Hands on experience in tackling any kind of environment:

People with good work experience knows how to handle people of various nature

in the office.

12
They might have overcome initially lots of people management experiences, they

will have a good knowledge understanding the human mind and adapting to it.

8. More benefits related to company policies:

People with good experience will be exposed to lots of beneficiary plans in the

new office. In order to retain them, companies will offer them many beneficial

plans like good medical coverage, private provident funds, pension plans, paid

leave and many more.

9. Chances of going abroad:

Getting a chance of going abroad related to work is not very common in all

organization. But for people with better work experience gets a good chance of

going abroad related to the job. This helps you experience different work culture

all over the world.

10. Increase independence will increase in growth:

A person with good experience will have enough number of skill set compared to a

fresh graduate. In this case, dependency on that person might increase

considerably, it will surely make them grow in the company.

13
This type of responsibility and dependence will only be rewarded to a person who

has a good amount of work experience.

11. No hesitation to the new environment:

People who already have a work experience will be mentally prepared to handle

the new work-life environment. And they generally have good adaptive skills as

they are exposed to all kind of people in the previous organization.

Disadvantages of Work Experience:

1. Salary negotiations might be tough:

Sometimes people might choose a job to gain experience than considering the

salary. It might do good for the job experience, but when thinking to shift a job it

might cause a problem as any salary offer for a new job will depend upon the

previous pay scale.

2. The experience might dominate the offer than skill set:

Sometimes our liking for the new job offer or our skill might differ from the role

we apply. In this case, more than an individual’s skill set, work experience on

some other skill which was not our choice will be considered more than the actual

skill set we possess.

14
So, we have to stick to our previous work experience than the skill set which

education provided us.

3. It might lessen your options:

Depending on the work experience skills, sometimes the number of job role we

tend to apply will get reduced. Once a person experienced in few skills in the

previous work atmosphere, he will be expected to only perform well in that

particular skill set.

So, obviously, the number of options will get reduced in choosing a job and it will

affect his/her skill set in the future.

4. Forced to decline higher study options:

There might be much higher study program available with a sabbatical. But these

might be declined as experienced persons are recruited to manage the position

vacant.

This is one important disadvantage as it will be declined due to the experience of

the person.

15
5. Pressure on handling expectations:

Being an experienced person might sometime give you lots of pressure related to

job goals. As an experienced person, people might expect more efficiency in terms

of work, people management, and team building and many more.

This is one of the disadvantages, as many people might not properly handle

pressure and might lose confidence.

6. Poor work-life balance:

People with good work experience are often expected to handle more commitment

towards the job.

As they go up the scale more commitment increases and it will affect their work-

life balance as well as their health. This is a very common disadvantage, as a good

number of people are affected by this issue.

All recruiters expect a well deserving candidate for a job opening. Sometimes

when there are too many applicants many factors are considered to scrutinize the

applications received. One such important factor which plays a major role in

selecting a right candidate is the work experience.

16
A recent study reveals that most of the recruiters when given a two graduated with

an equal degree and personal strength they tend to choose a person who has a good

work experience than a graduate with a good qualification. So, try to explore the

job world as much as possible by getting into the real-time scenario

19
The Indian pipe industry has been showing rapid growth since past several year

and the major reason for the growth of this industry is increasing demand for pipes

in the irrigation sector, oil and gas sector and also the real estate industry. The

demand for steel pipes such as seamless pipes HSAW, LSAW pipes is increasing

as the need for oil and gas transportation in India is growing. The demand for

plastic pipe such as PVC and CPVC is also increasing as these pipes are better in

quality and durability infrastructure development, urbanization and the subsequent

development of residential and industrial construct are fascinating the growth of

the pipe industry in India.

The government of India is coming up with new project and investment in the

irrigation sector. The focus of the government is on rural water management,

which will be fulfilled only when there will be proper transportation of water to

the-end-user.

Competition increase, access to abundant information, availability of similar

products and services etc. reduce competitive capability of organizations. The only

way for them to survive is to supply products and services with higher values and

qualities and their requires innovation and exploration and evaluation of

customer’s needs and wants.

20

CHAPTER-2

INDUSTRY PROFILE

24
The last decade of twentieth century witnessed an evolution for the Indian pipes

industry players, in wake of huge raw material reserves and infusion of funds for

capacity creation and modernization. As a result, mainstream steel producers and

iron ore producers have successfully scaled their operations to global scale. Amidst

the sustained growth of the steel industry, Indian steel pipe industry continued to

grow at snail ‘space However, a large growth potential was waiting to be

Unearthed and the ‘thrust’ came in wake of two important events - one, the great

Indian Infrastructure initiative by the Government of India to support the GDP

Growth roadmap; and second, the surge in the global oil prices to USD140 levels,

resulting in increased demand from oil and gas exploration industry. The steel

tubes and pipes industry witnessed robust demand from various domestic

industries like real estate, construction, telecom, power, energy, entertainment

zones, metros, airports and sports, etc. Key policy-led initiatives such as the urban

infrastructure programmed under Public Private Partnership also proved to be a

shot in the arm. Oil and Natural Gas industry, however continues to offer larger

opportunity for the industry.

During the first five years (2000-05), the global spend on exploration & production

of oil& gas to satiate the demand for energy consumption was USDlOObn. 738.7

QBTU (quadrillion British thermal units) by 2035. Due to limited reserves in crude
25
(present production of 8Omn barrels per day), demand switch to natural gas has

risen to present levels of 3tcm (trillion cubic meters). As more than 70% of oil &

gas reserves are found in Middle East and Eurasia, transportation of gas to deficit

regions of Asia and Europe entails huge demand for steel pipes.

INDIAN PIPE INDUSTRY

The Indian pipe industry with presence across all the categories of pipes (steel,

cement and plastic) has become a major exporting hub to the regions like Middle

East, US and Europe due to its location advantage and global accreditations. Also,

the lower oil and gas pipeline penetration level in India provides huge opportunity

for laying new pipeline infrastructure in the country, considering its vast

geographical area.

The operating environment for the Indian pipe industry was challenging during

FY2012. The steel pipe companies expanded their capacities domestically as well

as globally during the last couple of years, which led to excess capacities. Hence,

most of the domestic players had to resort to lower margin orders domestically to

maintain their order books. The higher input and finance costs significantly eroded

their profitability margins.

26
Infrastructure & Real Estate

Government is keep on developing India’s infrastructure and continues to put more

thrust on investments in its core sectors such as power, ports, roads, airports, etc.

The government has increased its budgetary allocation towards infrastructure to Rs

l,735.5bn.The rise in demand for housing and commercial spaces in the urban

region has led to a huge demand in hollow section and ERW pipes .ln the

infrastructure space, the company has already started supplying to prestigious

projects like the Delhi and Bangalore Airports and metros. Each airport and metro

station requires 15,000MT and 400MT of branded steel pipes and tubes. With the

real estate growing at a robust rate, the demand for steel pipes and tubes is also

expected to grow as it is used in scaffolding, fire safety and cabling .Increasing

numbers of malls and high rise buildings have led to an increased demand for

structural/hollow steel products as they are stronger and also have better aesthetic

sense

Automobiles

In Automobile sector, the bus body parts segment is coming up as a huge segment.

The government has also increased the budgetary allocation under JNNURM to

Rs.128.9bn. With~100,000buses to be manufactured over the next few years, steel

27
pipes and tube companies see a huge opportunity in this segment. The automobile

sector has shown robust growth in FY10. The sales of Passenger and Commercial

Vehicles grew by 26.9% and 35.0% respectively over FY09. With the domestic

economy on a strong growth track, we expect this sector to post robust growth.

ERW Tubes & Pipes Eyeing Newer Markets

Apart from the traditional markets, steel pipes & tubes manufacturers are now

targeting newer markets such as construction, urban infrastructure -airports, malls,

metros, piped gas distribution, fire safety segments and commercial passenger

vehicles. These markets are finding newer applications for steel pipes and tubes

like scaffolding, fencing, cabling, bus body parts, fire safety, etc.

R.C.C SPUNPIPES

Reinforced cement concrete spun pipes up to 1000 mm Dia are exclusively

reserved for manufacture in the 551 sector. These pipes are widely used for water

drainage, sewerage, culverts and irrigation. RCC pipes are classified as pressure

and non- pressure pipes viz. NP2, NP3, NP4 for use in specific conditions. These

pipes are made from cement, coarse and fine aggregate, sand, mild steel and HT

rods and bars.

28
Market Potential

Public Health Engineering Department, Public Works Departments, Agriculture

and Forest Department, National Highways, Environment Engineering

Department, Panchayats Municipal Corporations are the bulk consumers of RCC

spun pipes. Most of the customers are approved civil contractors who are executing

the works of the Government Department and Public Sector Undertakings.

Presently government is giving stress on rural irrigation and improving methods of

water supply scheme, so the demand for pipes is increasing.

The overall purpose of human resources (HR) is to ensure that the organization is

able to achieve success through people. HR professionals manage the . They can

specialize in finding, recruiting, training, and developing employees, as well as

maintaining employee relations or benefits. Training and development

professionals ensure that employees are trained and have continuous development.

This is done through training programs, performance evaluations, and reward

programs. Employee relations deals with the concerns of employees when policies

36
are broken, such as cases involving harassment or discrimination. On the other side

of the field are HR generalists or business partners. These HR professionals could

work in all areas or be labor relations representatives working

with unionized employees.

HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th Century, when

researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through

the strategic management of the workforce. It was initially dominated by

transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due

to globalization, company consolidation, technological advances, and further

research, HR as of 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and

acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial

and diversity and inclusion. In the current global work environment, most

companies focus on lowering employee turnover and on retaining the talent and

knowledge held by their workforce. New hiring not only entails a high cost but

also increases the risk of a new employee not being able to adequately replace the

position of the previous employee

2.MARKETING DEPARTMENT

A functional marketing department implements customer relationship management

functions to track and predict what customers want in their products. It connects

the customer to the product with hard data as well as emotional, qualitative

information that can help product designers differentiate your products from those

of a competitor. This information also helps marketing promotions by highlighting

these differences in marketing materials. A marketing department sets prices for

products that recoup development and promotional costs while generating revenue

for the company.

Promotions and PR

Marketing departments carry out promotional strategies for products and services,

and some may also incorporate promotional activities, such as public relations, for

the business as a whole. The promotions staff assists the sales force with sales

promotions; offers public relations support for product launches, trade shows and

other events; purchases advertising that illustrates product benefits and features;

and pitches the product to media outlets. Promotion activities range from creating

awareness of a product to persuading customers to try and then buy the product.

Marketing works closely with sales in generating new business. Employees entice

prospects to engage with your company in some way, even if it’s just visiting the

39
website, and then uses incentives to get customers to continue thinking about the

product so that the sales team can convince them to buy the product. This is called

generating leads. Not every lead turns into a paying customer, so business

development is ongoing.

It can also include identifying new markets for existing products or discovering a

need that current customers have for a modified version of an existing product

The modem market is consumer oriented market and it deals with customers. A

satisfied customer of that product so “customer satisfaction” is very important.
