Our Motivation
Vallecas, from its beginning as a independent city, has been considered part of the
suburbs of Madrid in spite of its proximity. Over the time, Madrid became bigger and
absorbed Vallecas as a new neighborhood. This fact has given locals an own identity.
Vallecas has welcomed people from the less thriving areas of Spain and, in the last year,
immigrants from all the world. So, in its veins runs blood of hardworking and humble
people who came to Madrid looking for a better future.
Nowadays the neighborhood has devepoled a small and medium scale enterprises, where
stand out the hospitality sector. This sector is composed by a large number of
restaurants and bars, so its offer is very mixed.
On the other hand, the neighborhood suffers the highest rate of youth unemployment
and one of the highest rate of school drop-out. Due to the sociological characteristics of
the residents families and the lack of sources given by the central administration, local
agents have decided to take the bull by the horns and do something about it.
The organization
We are a team formed by member of The
Neighbourhood’s Association of Vallecas, The Local
Restaurant Guild and The Youth Association of
Vallecas which have decide to work together in a non-
profit way to carry out the first food festival in
Vallecas with the aim of raising funds to fight against
school drop-out youth unemployment
