INTRODUCTION
• Self compacting concrete(SSC) is also known as self
consolidating concrete ,
is:
- a highly flowable,
- non-segregating concrete
That:
- can spread into place,
- fill the formwork and
- encapsulate the reinforcement without any mechanical
compacting.
HISTORY OF SCC

• Father of SSC technology is prof .Dr. Hajime Okamura.

• Developed self compacting concrete in 1986 in JAPAN.
• Currently president of Kochi University of Technology.
• OKAMURA solved the issue of degrading quality of concrete construction
due to lack of compaction by the employment of SSC which is independent
of the quality of construction work.

PROBLEMS WITH CONVENTIONAL CONCRETE

• Requirement of skilled worker for compaction in conventional concrete.

• Difficult to use mechanical compaction for
- Underwater concreting
- Cast in-situ foundation
- Structures with heavy reinforcement
-And other problems are scaling, crazing, cracking
Curling etc.
BENEFITS OF SSC

• Faster construction
• Reduction in site manpower
• Better surface finishes
• Easier placing
• Improved durability
• Greater freedom in design
• Thinner concrete sections
• Reduced noise levels, absence of vibration
• Safer working environment.
REQUIREMENTS

For a mixture to have self compatibility, it should

have
-filling ability
-passing ability
-segregation resistance
CONSTITUENTS OF SSC

With regard to its composition, SSC consists of the some components as

Conventionally vibrated concrete, which are
• cement
• Aggregate
• Water
• Chemical admixtures i.e. super plasticizers and viscosity modifying agents
• Mineral admixtures i.e. fly ash, silica, fume, GGBFS etc.
PROPERTIES OF FRESH SSC
IN FRESH STATE, SSC HAVE FOLLOWING PROPERTIES-
• Filling ability (excellent deformability) – flows easily at suitable speed into
formwork.
• Passing ability (ability to pass reinforcement without blocking) –passes
through reinforcement without blocking
• High resistance to segregation- the distribution of aggregate particles
remains homogenous in both vertical and horizontal directions
• Static segregation due to gravity, vertical direction
• Dynamic segregation due to flow, horizontal direction
TEST METHODS FOR SSC:
• Slump flow test
• Slump flow(T 50 cm)
• J-ring
• V-funnel
• L box
• U box
• Fill box
SSC-APPLICATIONS
• Burj khalifa in Dubai (2010) - over 828 meters height and 166 stories
-SSC is playing a greater role in high rise construction to overcome reinforcement
and ease of placement.
• Sodra Lanken, Sweden (1997) – one of the largest projects used SSC
-SSC was ideal to cope with the density of reinforcement required and the highly
uneven rock surfaces
• Dragon bridge (2012), spain – 124m long bridge, distributed in four spans
• The dragon’s body is made up of 4 meters high and 2 meters wide , of SSC.
CONCLUSION
• Self compacting concrete is considered to be the most
promising building material for the expected
revolutionary changes on the job sites.
• We can create durable and reliable concrete
structures using SSC
