Overview

 In signal processing, filtering is a process that removes unwanted

components or features from the signal.
 Filters are widely used in electronics and telecommunication, in radio,
television, audio recording, radar, image processing, control system etc.
Types of Filters

 Linear or non linear..

 Time variant or Invariant.
 Casual or un casual.
 Analogue or Digital.
 Discrete Time or Continuous Time.
 Passive or Active.
 Infinite Impulse Response.
 Finite Impulse Response.
Gaussian Filter

Principle
It is based on the principle of low pass filter.
Gaussian filter is a filter whose impulse response is a Gaussian function.

Homomorphic Filter

Principle
 It is based on the principle of linear filter.
 It is generalized technique for image enhancement.
 It increases image brightness and contrast.

Median Filter

Principle
 It is based on the principle of non linearity.
 It is used to remove salt and pepper noise.
 It is used for edge detection in the image.

Filtering for Texture Classification

 Classification and segmentation of texture content in digital images has

received considerable attention during the past decades and signal
processing techniques are most commonly used for texture identification.

Feature Extraction Approaches

1. Consider the below textured images generated through sinusoids.

2. Filtering is applied on textured image.
3. Then local energy functions are applied.
