Hygienic Laundry
System

1
Laundry

 The laundry department is responsible

for the cleaning and maintenance of all
linens .

 The staff includes the laundry

supervisor, laundry attendants, and
seamsters.

2
Staff

 Laundry supervisors- supervises the

attendants and seamsters. The supervisor is
also responsible for keeping track of all
linens and replacing linens when necessary.
 The laundry attendants perform all the
tasks involved in washing laundry. The
seamsters repairs worn or torn linens.
Seamsters used to be called seamstresses.

3
Laundry

 Tasks include washing laundry, care of

linens, and inventory of linens
 Washing laundry includes five steps: sorting,
washing, drying, folding, and storing.
 The purpose of washing laundry is to make it
clean, sanitary, and attractive.

4
Sorting

 Before laundry can be washed, it must be

sorted.
 Sorters should separate laundry into these
piles: regular, damp, stained, and torn or
damaged.
 Damp linens are washed as soon as possible
to prevent the formation of mildew.

5
Pre-Treating Stains

 Linens that are stained or very dirty should

be treated with a stain remover as soon as
possible.
 There are three basic treatment methods:
1. Soaking in a stain removal solution
2. Applying a detergent paste to the stain
3. Using special treatment methods tested through
experience

6
Repair of Linens

 Torn or damaged linens need to be

repaired before they are washed.
 Linens that cannot be repaired must be
discarded and deleted from inventory.
 Repairing linens is also called mending.
Seamsters repair the linens, drapes,
curtains, and other linen products for
the hotel.
7
Washing and Drying

 Hot water and sanitizing solutions are used in the

washing machine for both cleaning and killing
pathogens.
 Laundry must be thoroughly dried before folding.
 Laundry is dried in the dryer. Pathogens often thrive
in the dryer’s lint trap. The lint trap must be regularly
cleaned with a sanitizing solution.

8
Folding and Storing

 After linens are dried, they must be ironed

and folded. Flatwork presses and flatwork
irons are used to iron sheets. Some hospitals
have machines that automatically fold
sheets.

9
Care for Linens

 New linens are expensive; therefore, efforts

are made to make the linens last.
 Linens should last at least three years before
they need to be repaired.
 Linens last longer when they are handled
carefully and washed properly.

10
Inventory of Linens

 The linen room is where clean linens are

stored.

 The Linen Room Supervisor or the

Executive Housekeeper is responsible for
the linen inventory.

11
PURPOSE OF WASHING

• Elimination of the MICRO-ORGANISMS:

- Chemical action of detergent gives PH > 9 which
destroys micro-organism
- Hot water: 63°C for +20 min
- Elimination of the stains that are the food for micro-
organisms
• Visually CLEAN ASPECT:
- Comfort of the patients
- Insurance for the customer
BARRIER LAUNDRY

Barrier laundry is recommended for :

• Hospitals and clinics
• Nursing homes
• Food industry
• Clean rooms
PURPOSE OF BARRIER LAUNDRY

• The plus of a barrier laundry in comparison to

Conventional laundering:
- not only the cleaning and decontamination aspect:
Barrier laundry avoids the risk of re-contamination of
clean linen
Cross contamination and HAI

The "cross contamination" is what describes the pollution of

clean linen with something dirty. It can be any surface, operator
hands, dirty linen, …

The "cross contamination" is what will bring germs, bacteria or

viruses on linen supposed to be clean, and will make it dirty.

Ultimately this leads to an HAI (Hospital Acquired Infection) when

a patient is infected with a disease at the hospital.
What does RABC say?

RABC is nothing more than a quality process. It recommends to:

-Identify the bio-contamination hazards in the whole laundry process
-Setup control procedures to monitor the risks with levels of alert
-Monitor the levels on a regular basis and register the findings, act when the
alert level is exceeded
-Establish corrective actions to permanently improve the process and reduce
the risk of contamination.

Example of control measures:

-Controlling the length of storage
-Restriction of staff movement
-Functional separation of clean and soiled textiles to avoid recontamination
27

-Insist on staff hygiene (dress, hand hygiene)

Risk analysis and bio contamination control (RABC)

Barrier concept

The barrier concept brings the only logical solution to an efficient:

-restriction of staff movement
-functional separation of clean and soiled textiles to avoid recontamination
in the laundry room.

Straightforward flow

Illustration on previous slide is showing that there is no crossing

of linen within the laundry.

The more straight forward the production, the best chances of

delivering hygiene?

This example shows an ideal case as it is a new build, but in

many instances we must work on existing facilities that are
crooked and everything but straight. One should always think of
the best possible way to have a forward flow of linen in the
laundry.

Laundry
Logistics
How do we arrange the logistics of the laundry?
We organize a direct line of linen from bed to bed.
• Avoid mixing of dirty and clean linen at all times.
• Also avoid mixing of the clean linen.
• Put the dirty linen in bags - Contaminated linen and
Uncontaminated linen.
• Use a fixed route for the dirty linen to the laundry.
• Sort the linen into categories, drying process and weigh the linen
• Load the machine and start the program.
• The control panel ensures that the entire washing process is
completed before the door opens on the clean side.
• Iron, dry and or fold the linen, not more than 4 actions.
• Use a fixed route for the clean linen from the laundry in a
dedicated container and make the bed Closed system
