time: Jesus Christ life

technological evolution in
architecture, from the end of
the 19th Century to the XXIst
Century.

 Antoni Gaudi represents


Catalonian Modernism
(contemporary movement akin
to Art Noveau). But still he has
his own style.

THE PROJECT: GAUDI’S VISION
• His works are inspired by:
• His religious faith
• Sagrada Familia Objective: to tell the story of the Jesus Christ’s life
• Love of nature (God’s work)
• Organic forms instead of straight lines

The building is structured in 3 façades:


• one for Jesus’ birth
• another one for his death and
• finally, the last one for his resurrection.

• It will also have 18 towers:


• 12 symbolizing the Apostles (four for each façade).
• 4 evangelists
• The Virgin Mary
• Christ. The tallest tower, crowned by a large cross, not yet
constructed.
It will stand 170 meters, only one meter less than the Montjuïc

THE NATIVITY FAÇADE: THE CELEBRATION OF JESUS’ BIRTH

It’s the only façade built while Gaudi was alive.


• First years of Jesus Christs: starts in his
birthday and ends at the beginning of his
ministry.

• Represents the changing nature and all


forms of life through the different sculptures.

The suffering of Jesus Christ

Or Façade of the Suffering way


• Gaudi wanted to show the different stages
of suffering. For that, he wanted the façade to
be austere and evoke pain and sacrifice

• Finished in 1989. Different style. Sculptures

drawings.

THE GLORY FAÇADE
The resurrection of Jesus Christ

It will represent the Celestial Glory of Jesus


• Main entrance, it will give access to the
central nave
• There was little information about this
façade. The only things left after the bombing
of Gaudi’s studio is the structural map and the
symbolic plan.
• Gaudi wanted this façade to have stairs and
be seen from the sea

We know the façade will…
• Represent the road to God: Death, Final Judgment and Glory, or Hell for those who
have deviated from God’s will
• Rest on 8 large columns dedicated to the Eight spiritual gifts.
• At their base, representations of the Seven Deadly Sins; at their top, The Seven
Heavenly Virtues.

The portal will be composed of:


• The words Credo
• An sculpture of Jesus surrounded by angels
• Structures with the form of clouds that will tell the story of how God created the
World
• 16 lights
• It will depict the purgatory and death, and on the top it will have an image of the last
judgment
• It will be decorated with demons, saints, false gods, heresy
