FLEXIBLE
PAVEMENT
IN METRO MANILA
SKYWAY
WHAT IS FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT?
composed of a bituminous material
surface coarse and underlying base and
subbase courses.
ADVANTAGES:
Adaptability to stage construction
Availability of low-cost types that can be
easily built
Ability to be easily opened and patched
Easy to repair frost heave and settlement
DISADVANTAGES:
Higher maintenance cost
Shorter life span under heavy use
Damage by oils and certain chemicals
Weak edges that may require curbs or
edge devices
THICKNESS DESIGN:
Several procedures are used based on
volume and weight of traffic
Load supporting capacity of soil is
important
Heavy vehicle wheel load has greater
impact
THICKNESS DESIGN:
Traffic analysis in necessary designs are
chosen based on:
• Designed traffic in terms of cumulative
numbers of standard axels
• CBR value of subgrade
TOTAL THICKNESS OF PAVEMENT:
PAVEMENT DISTRESS
Pavement distress refers to the
condition of a pavement surface in
terms of its general appearance.
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Alligator Cracking
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Bleeding
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Block Cracking
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Depression
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Longitudinal Cracking
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Transverse Cracking
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Patching
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Potholes
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Rutting
TYPES OF DISTRESSES:
Raveling
PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
Clogged exit(Filinvest Exit)

-Road widening in Filinvest exit: decongested the traffic

since the vehicles will exit in Sucat and Alabang exits going
to South Luzon Expressway(SLEX).
PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
SLIPPERY PAVEMENT

-Speed limits are strictly implemented.

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
Collisions and Over Speeding

-Installation of 43 CCTV cameras in Skyway stage 1. This

cameras are viewed in real-time and are connected to the
Central Control System to properly monitor the traffic and
the emergency situations in the Skyway
