•How would you define DISASTER?
•The central topic of this subject is to
explore the span of disaster.
•We will talk about the why, when,
where, who and how of disaster.

•You will be given paper strips.
•You will think of a disaster you have
experienced or have heard of.
•You will write three words to
characterize the disaster.
•You are given 40 seconds to do this.

•Look for your groupmates based on
the color of the strips that you have.
•Share with your groupmates what you
have written.
•You are given 2 minutes for this.

•A bigger strip will be given to you.
•Based on the words written by you and
your groupmates, you will write your
own definition of disaster.
•Assign a presenter for your group.
•You are given 3 minutes to do this.

community or a society involving
widespread human, material, economic or
environmental losses and impacts, which
exceeds the ability of the community or
society to cope using its own resources.

to the definition given earlier.
•You are given 2 minutes to do this.
DISASTER RISK
•The term refers to the potential (not actual)
disaster losses, in lives, health status,
livelihoods, assets and services, which
could occur in a particular community or
society over some specified future time
period.
