MANUFACTURING PROCESS

OF TENNIS BALL

Presented to: Dr. Saifullah Samo
INTRODUCTION

A Tennis ball is a ball

designed for the sport of
tennis.

Tennis balls are

fluorescent yellow at
major sporting
event, but in
recreational play can
be virtually any
color.

3
PRODUCTION OF SOLUTION

A variety of powders
are added to the
rubber to give the
required properties,
e.g. strength, color

The rubber
is thoroughly
masticated
(kneaded)

4
EXTRUSION

The rubber compound is heated

and extruded by forcing through
an orifice under pressure to
form a rod which is then cut
into pellets

It is like squeezing
toothpaste from a tube.

The pellets are then cooled.

5
FORMING

The flash is removed by a

The pellets are loaded into a hydraulic press fitted with
hydraulic press which forms cutting knives, which remove
them into hemispherical 'half- the half-shells from the
shells‘. sheet.

6
BUFFING

The edge of the half shell is

roughened (or buffed) with
a grinding wheel to provide
a key for the adhesive
which is next applied.

7
INFLATION

There are two methods

of inflating or
pressurizing the ball

Chemicals Compressed-air

Sodium nitrite and

Ammonium Chloride

8
CORE SOLUTION

A solution is
applied to the
buffed balls
by dipping it
into the
solution.

9
FELTING

The fabric covering

on the tennis ball is
known as felting.

There are two

types of cloth
used in felting.

Melton cloth Needle cloth

10
MOULDING

The heat and pressure give strength

between rubber core and cloth, cloth
and cloth, and join it into a smooth
seam.

The ball is placed in

a moulding press and
heated.
11
STEAMING

Tumbling the balls

slowly through a
steam laden
atmosphere

12
FINISHING

The balls are packed

into pressurized tins or
The balls are then tubes which maintain
tested and graded. the balls pressure whilst
stored.
