Ageing of bitumen
Bitumen ageing - Short term ageing and long term
ageing.
4
Need for the Study
Safe and environment friendly approach for the disposal of
waste engine oil.
5
Objectives
To investigate the viability of using waste engine oil as a
rejuvenator of aged bitumen.
6
METHODOLOGY
Test on neat bitumen
(Penetration, Softening point, Viscosity, Ductility &
Specific Gravity)
The bottles are placed in the RTFO oven carousel, then the doors are
closed, and carousel rotated at 15 rpm for 85 minutes. During this
time, maintain the oven temperature at 163°C.
8
Rolling Thin Film Oven
While the bottle is rotating the liquid bitumen also rolls inside
the bottle and exposed to heat.

16
Conclusion
The material properties of unaged and aged bitumen was studied.
17
The aged bitumen has the highest softening point(38% increase) .
18
Ageing lead to 11% increase in viscosity.
The results for viscosity test support the claim that WEO can
be used as softening agent to counteract the stiffening of
binders for aged bitumen.
19
The ductility value decreases as the bitumen aged.
20
Conclusion
Optimum percentage of WEO is 10%.
