1.1. Background of the study
 Communicating is what humans do everyday.
 Communicating can be done through different media. One of them is
Literature.
 Song’s Lyric is also a Literature.
 Song’s Lyric has become part of growing up
 Figurative Languages found in song’s lyric.
 Figurative Languages part of pragmatic study.
 Lana Del Rey uses figurative languages in her songs

 What are the types of figurative languages found in Lana Del Rey’s song’s
lyrics?
 What are the purposes intended by the use of figurative languages?
1.3 Objective of The Study

 To identify the types of figurative language used in Lana Del Rey’s song’s lyrics
 To identify the purposes intended by the use of those figurative language.
1.4 Scope and Limitation
 The scope of this research will discuss about what are the types of figurative
language used in Lana Del Rey Song and the purpose behind it.
 For the limitation, the writer will limit the research to focus only analyzing
the figurative language that found in the song lyric of Lana Del Rey’s selected
songs.
1.5 Signnificance of The Study
Theoretically
 The author expects that this research can enrich the research in linguistics field,
especially in pragmatics, which becomes a bibliographical resource to the next
relevant type of research.
 The author expects that this study may contribute to the development of linguistic
research in the future.
Practically
 The research findings used as an informative input for language learners to improve
their linguistic knowledge, especially in pragmatics, by giving deeper understanding to
readers in analyzing figurative language and how it is used in song’s lyrics.
 Hopefully, this research inspires other researchers to develop or to conduct other
research in the same scope with different subjects.

 Figurative Language : Figurative language is some words and phrases that
contain hidden meaning in it.
 Lana Del Rey : Lana Del Rey is an international singer and song
writer from United States
 Song : A song is a composition made up of lyrics and
music, with the intent of the lyrics being sung.
 Lyrics : Lyrics are the words of a song that reference the
topic

• Griffiths (2006, p.6), pragmatic is the study of utterances meaning.
• Allan and Jaszczolt’s statement (2012, p.1), Pragmatics is the study of
human communication: the choices speakers make to express their
intended meaning and the kinds of inferences that hearers draw from
an utterance in the context of its use.
• Sankaravelayuthana (2018, p.14) stated that there is a strong connection
between meaning and pragmatics

cannot be taken literally.

contain figurative languages
 Sources of Data: Lana Del Rey’s selected songs from her several album
3.3 Data Collection
 Collect the lyrics
 Read through all the lyrics
 Search any expressions using figurative language in the lyrics
 Take some notes about figurative language and put information needed
 Classify each findings into each kinds of figurative language
