ROUTING
Flow routing
- the procedure to determine the time and magnitude of flow (i.e., the flow hydrograph) at
a point on a watercourse from known or assumed hydrographs at one or more points
upstream.
- if the flow is a flood.

Hydrologic (lumped) routing

- routing by lumped system methods.

Hydraulic (distributed) routing

- routing by distributed systems methods.
Figure 9.1.1 illustrates how stream flow
increases as the variable source area extends
into drainage basin.

 Variable source area

- the area of the watershed that is actually
contributing flow to the stream at any point.
- expands during rainfall and contracts
thereafter.

Eq. 9.1.1
HYDROLOGIC RESERVOIR ROUTING
Level pool routing
- a procedure for calculating the outflow
hydrograph from a reservoir assuming a horizontal
water surface, given its inflow hydrograph and
storage-outflow characteristics.
