can not be seen with the naked eyes. Such type
of organisms are called Microorganisms or
Microbes. They are so small in size that they
can be only seen with the help of microscope.
Example :- Bacteria, Fungi.
Viruses are also microscopic. They,
however reproduce only inside the
cell of the host organism, which
may be a bacterium, plant or
human. Most of the diseases are
caused by the viruses. some of such
diseases are :-
Common diseases - Cough, cold etc.
Serious diseases – Polio and chicken
pox
Microorganisms may be single celled
like bacteria of multicellular like
fungi. They can survive under all
types of environment , ranging from
extreme cold to hot springs and
deserts to marshy land.
Microorganisms like amoeba can live
alone while fungi lives in colonies.
Microorganisms are used for various purposes.
They are used in the preparation of curd bread
and cake.
Microorganisms have been used for the production of alcohol
since ages.

They are also used in cleaning up of the

environment. For example the organic wastes are
broken down into harmless and usable substances by
bacteria. In agriculture they are used to increase soil
fertility by fixing nitrogen.
Microorganisms are harmful in many ways.
Some of the microorganisms cause
