WHAT IS MICROBIOLOGY

Study of all living organisms that are too small

to be visible with the naked
eye.
Fields of Microbiology

 Parasitology: The study of the biology of parasites and parasitic diseases.

 Mycology: The study of fungi.
 Bacteriology: The study of bacteria.
 Virology: The study of viruses.
 Protozoology: The study of protozoa.
 Phycology: The study of algae.
 Microbiology is the study of all living organisms that are
too small to be visible with the naked eye. This includes
bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, prions, protozoa and
algae, collectively known as 'microbes'..
Bacteria

bacteriaare single-celled organisms that

produce their own energy and can
reproduce on their own.
 Microscopic single-celled organisms lacking a
distinct nucleus are known as bacteria. They may
be shaped like spheres, rods, or spirals. They
inhabit virtually all environments, including soil,
water, organic matter, and the bodies of animals.
 Thesemicrobes play key roles in nutrient cycling,
biodegradation/biodeterioration, climate change,
food spoilage, the cause and control of disease, and
biotechnology. Thanks to their versatility, microbes
can be put to work in many ways: making life-
saving drugs, the manufacture of biofuels, cleaning
up pollution, and producing/processing food and
drink
Shapes of Bacteria

 1. Spheres
 2. Rods
 3. Spiral
Bacteria are classified into five
groups according to their basic
shapes: spherical (cocci), rod
(bacilli), spiral (spirilla), comma
(vibrios) or corkscrew
(spirochaetes).
 Coccus Bacteria
 Staphylococcus is the cause of many skin infections. Streptococcus often causes
throat infections. Other members of the coccus family include Pneumococcus,
which causes pneumonia, and Neisseria, which causes gonorrhea.

Bacilli: Although anthrax remains the best-known Bacillus disease, in recent years
other Bacillus species have been increasingly implicated in a wide range of infections
including abscesses, bacteremia/septicemia, wound and burn infections, ear
infections, endocarditis, meningitis, ophthalmitis, osteomyelitis, peritonitis,
and ...
 Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped
bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and commonly
affects domestic and wild animals around the world. People can get sick with
anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal
products.
