BRIEF HISTORY
• In 1941-1945 – The empire of
Japan conquered the Philippines

• The Japanese banned English


newspapers.

• There was minimal freedom of


speech and of the press.
• The only contact with
the outside world was
done with utmost
secrecy through
Underground Radio
Program called
“VOICE OF FREEDOM”
• The Japanese censored Filipino
writers’ works strictly.

• Theaters were used to show English


play translated into Filipino

• The weekly LIWAYWAY was placed


under strict surveillance until it was
managed by Japanese named
ISHAWARA
THREE TYPES OF POEMS THAT
EMERGED DURING THIS PERIOD
• HAIKU (はいく) - a poem of free
verse that the Japanese like.
• 17 syllables
• 3 lines
• First line had 5 syllables,
• Second, 7 syllables,
• Third, five syllables..
• TANAGA (Tanka) - like
the Haiku, is short but it
had measure and rhyme.
Each line had 17 syllables
and it’s also allegorical in
meaning.
