HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
 The name "Cebu" came from the old
Cebuano word sibu or sibo ("trade"), a
shortened form of sinibuayng hingpit ("the
place for trading"). It was originally applied
to the harbors of the town of Sugbu, the
ancient name for Cebu City
 Cebu City, the capital of Cebu, is considered
to be the oldest city in the Philippines. It is
also known as the oldest settlement
established by the Spaniards in the country.
Found in the island are rich traces of the
Philippine history left by mostly the

10) OSMEÑA PEAK
 Going south, you could climb the
Osmeña Peak of Cebu in Mantalongon,
Dalaguete (pronounced “Dalaget”).
Standing at 1,013 meters above sea
level, Osmeña Peak is the highest point
in the entire island. Lime stones that
have sharp protruding peaks which are
perfect for taking pictures make up
these hills.
 The peak is part of the Mantalongon
mountain range that stretches as far
as the municipality of Badian. It is
considered a twin to Bohol’s Chocolate
Hills.

Cebuano-Visayan term for “looking over
in a distance”.

 CASA VERDE CEBU
 is a Spanish- American combination
restaurant with three locations. The
original, largest branch is in Ramos. The

Park and in Ayala Center Cebu.
 This family -owned restaurant was named
“Casa verde” which means “green house”
in Spanish. The owners’ Spanish roots
inspire Casa Verde. Casa Verde’s first
branch is an ancestral house of the
family. For this reason, customers go
there for the “homey” ambiance.
Although their place is Spanish -inspired,
the food is definitely American -inspired.
 HOUSE OF LECHON

 is where you can get ahold of the sought -after Lechon of Cebu. It has three
branches: Kamputhaw, Robinsons Galleria, and Talisay. Cebu’s “Lechon” or
roasted pig is the most popular delicacy of the region.

 Sinulog Festival
 This is Cebu City’s most popular
and grandest festival celebrated
every 3rd Sunday of January in
honor of the Señor Sto. Niño.

highlight of this festivity is the
street dancing.
INASAL (HALAD) FESTIVAL

Inasal Festival, celebrated

every October 14th to 15th,

KADAUGAN SA MACTAN

 The Kadaugan sa Mactan,

celebrated every 22nd-27th of
April, is a weeklong
commemoration of the historic
battle of Mactan between the
Spanish Conquestador Fernando
Magallanes and Mactan Chieftain
Lapu-Lapu. The festival features
various activities highlighted by the
series of musical productions
culminating with the famous battle,
food street and live band
entertainment.
 SEMANA SANTA SA BANTAYAN
Also known as “Pasko sa
Kasakit”, this festival is
celebrated during Holy
Thursday and Good Friday in
the observance of the Holy
Week on Bantayan Island
with procession and merry
making.
 TAGBO FESTIVAL
 19th of January (Poro, Camotes Island)
It is celebrated every January in honor
of patron Sto. Niño de Poro. Beloved
memoir of a living past, Tagbo is the
cornerstone from which this great
municipality has sprung. Rich in
cultural heritage and deep in spiritual
values, Tagbo is a very significant
