Percent is a ratio that compares a
number to 100. Percent describes a
whole as though there were 100
parts, even though the whole may
not actually contain 100 parts. Thus,
the DENOMINATOR is always 100.

Example 2.
An amateur basketball player wants to buy a pair of Nike
shoes worth PHP 8550 at a 30% discount. What is the
sale price?
Solution A: Solution B:
30% of 8550 = Discount 70% of 8550 = sale
.30 x 8550 = 2565 price
8550 – 2565 = 5985 = sale .70 x 8550 = 5985

Commission
The amount of money paid to an employee for
selling an item usually based on a certain percent
agreed upon by the seller and the owner is called
commission. The amount of money turned overt
to the owner of the goods/items deducting the
commission is the net proceeds.

A car dealer sold a brand new car for PHP 650 000 and
was paid a commission of 2.25%. How much earnings
did he get from this transaction?
Solution:
2.25% of 650 000 = commission
.0225 x 650 000 = PHP 14,625

 Example 3.B
Cinderella bought a blouse with a sale price of PHP
637.50 and on a 15% discount during the last day sale
period. What is the marked price?
Solution:
15% of x = 637.50
.15x = 637.50
x = PHP 750.00
