National economic development of India fully depends on healthy
functioning of harbour system. According to the ministry of
Shipping , approximately 95 % of India’s quantity by trade and
70% by value are made up through transport.
New Mangalore Port is located on the West Coast of India and managed by New Mangalore Port
Trust (NMPT).
The Port is a modern all‐weather port situated at Panambur, Mangalore (Karnataka State in South
India), on the West Coast of India, 170 nautical miles South of Mormugao and 191 nautical miles
North of Cochin Port.
The Mangalore Harbour Project started in 1962 and was completed in May 1974. On 1st April 1980, the
Port Trust Board was set up under the Major Port Trust Act, 1963. Since then, NMPT has been
functioning as the 9th Major Port Trust and has fallen in line with other Major Port Trusts
functioning in the country.
The National Highway 66 passes just outside the port connecting Panvel and Kochi. The Port is served
by a Broad Gauge Railway line and is well connected with Southern portion of country through
Mangalore, Kerala State and Chennai.
The nearest Airport, Bajpe (Mangalore Airport) is just 14 kms from the Port. Mangalore is well
connected to Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai by daily flights.

) New Mangalore Port is a deep water all weather port and the only major port of Karnataka and ninth
major port in India. The major commodities exported through the Port are Iron Ore Concentrates &
Pellets, Iron Ore Fines, POL Products, granite stones, containerized cargo, etc. The major imports of
the Port are Crude and POL products, LPG, coal, limestone, timber logs, finished fertilizers, liquid
ammonia, phosphoric acid, other liquid chemicals, containerized cargo, etc.

infrastructure and cargo handling system, complying environmental,
social, safety and security standards

and services of world class standards.
NMPT has a number of strong and weak points in terms of its position in the Indian
and international port facility and service markets. Furthermore, NMPT faces a numbe
of opportunities and threats.

Weaknesses
• Its marine infrastructure is designed to allow ships of maximum Length
Over All (LOA) 245 m.
• Lack of excellent road and railway connectivity.
• Lack of superior technology in the operation of the port.

Opportunities

The port has the capacity of handling LPG parcel size up to 23000tonnes
The NMPT is the ideal port to handle project cargo for mega industruies.
There is a open area for stacking the cargo in and out the wharf area of the port.
The port facilities round the clock pilot age land and marine security.
THREATS
• The major threats faced by NMPT are competitors threat,major competing ports.

Excellent transportation medium and implementation of modern machinery in other
ports and its lagging in emergency as one of the treats.

Ultra modern oil jettis and sophisticated cranes and modern equipment.

STRATEGY
NMPT’S strategies to be an all cargo type port for both captive and
non-captive cargoes. For this it invest in infrastructure(berth&
jetties)

cargo from one place to another all over India as well as whole
world.
