Introduction
Lost circulation is the partial or complete loss of drilling fluid or cement
slurry to the formation during drilling or cementing operation.

Causes of Lost Circulation:

• Due to the formation types.
• When Hydrostatic Head is greater than the Formation Pressure.

Effects of Lost Circulation:

• Loss of Drilling time.
• Loss of Drilling mud and it’s effective constituents.
• Increase in rig cost per day.

3
Introduction

Lost circulation materials and its uses:

Lost circulation materials are used to prevent fluid losses into the
formation by bridging and cementing the fracture ,voids or crack.
Examples: Baker’s Squeeze, Cotton Seeds Hulls and Calcium Carbonate.

Properties of Lost Circulation Materials:

• Fibrous
• To withstand high temperature
• Sweallable
• Extrudable
• Quick seal

Literature Survey
1. The squeezed juice of this mustard seeds has a viscoelastic feature
and can be used as a gelling or thickening agent, Urtica Cannabina
plant is used for the bridging and cementation of the voids. Alireza,
Ghaffar Khan Ahmadreza, Zahra Azimi, Masood, Mostafa
Keshavarz, Research Institute Of Petroleum Industry ,Volume
45, December 2018, 45(6): 1154–1165. .
2. Sugar cane can be used in well working composition for filtration
control, thus as an environmentally friendly drilling fluid. Sugar cane
bagasse is a fibrous residue remaining after sugar cane stalk has
crushed and the juice removed. Zakuan A, 2006,The Investigation
of Corn Cobs and Sugar Cane Waste as a Drilling Fluid
Additive.
3. BAKER-SQUEEZ plug develops compressive strength, un-weighted
dewatered plug has a compressive strength of > 952 psi and a
weighted plug greater than 12.0 ppg has a compressive strength of >
1350 psi. Easy mixing and pumping. No spacer required. No setting
time required. BAKER HUGES

5
Objectives
1. Selection of eco-friendly lost circulation material.
2. To find the effect of eco-friendly lost circulation materials in the mud
rheology.
3. To test the lost circulation material in Low Pressure Low Temperature
and High Pressure High Temperature conditions.
4. To compare the eco-friendly lost circulation material with the
commercially available lost circulation material.

Works to be done

1. Processing of Natural Lost circulation materials.

2. To test rheological properties of mud (native mud + LCM) and
compare it with rheological properties of commercially available (
Baker's squeeze) with native mud
3. To check mud cake thickness and filtrate loss using LPLT filter press.
4. To check mud cake thickness and filtrate loss using HPHT filter press.
