COT2

The document provides a series of multiplication problems and explains the concept of exponents, which indicate how many times a base is multiplied by itself. It includes examples of rewriting products in exponential form and applying laws of exponents such as power of powers, product of a power, and quotient of a power. Additionally, it encourages students to practice and simplify expressions using these laws.

Give the product of

each of the following

as fast as you can.
Are you ready?
3 x 3 = ________
4 x 4 x 4 = ________
5 x 5 x 5 = ________
2 x 2 x 2 = ________
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = _______
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 =______
Guide Question:
Can you give a short
way of finding the
product of the given?
Explain your answer
2
The exponent tells us how
many times the base is
multiplied by itself. The
base is the factor which
is to be multiplied by
itself n times to obtain
the product.
To interpret where n is a
a n

positive integer:
a =
n a • a • a • a ….. (n times)
a is called the base
n is called the exponent
52 = 5 x 5 = 25
6 4 = 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 = 216
25 = 2 x 5 = 10
10 3 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 300

n m = a nm
PRODUCT OF A POWER

a n • a m = a m+n
QUOTIENT OF A POWER

a /a
n m = a n-m
Let’s do this!
Rewrite each of these in exponential
form. (an)

The exponent tells us how many times the base is multiplied by itself.
The base is the factor which is to be multiplied by itself n times to obtain
the product. The power refers to the product of equal factors.
To interpret an where n is a positive integer:

an = a • a • a • a ….. (n times)
*a is called the base
*n is called the exponent

Ex. 53 = 5x5x5 = 125

LAWS OF EXPONENT

(an)m = anm power of powers

an • am = am+n product of a power
an/am = an-m quotient of a power
