Introduction
Population influx in urban areas has caused deficiency and delinquency in the quality of
services to its residents. IoT based technologies can go a long way to plug such issues and
collectively make lives easier.
Internet of things
Concept that enables communication between internetworking
devices communicate through the internet to achieve a settled

Key features of a smart city

Objectives &
Approaches

The objective is to undertake a study of Internet of things (IoT)

applications in the context of urban developments thus making cities
smart.

A comprehensive study of different practices being used in cities

globally; employing, IoT technologies and concepts to optimize and
streamline services.
Description of work

The IoT is a broad network which employs standard communication protocols

where the internet is a point of convergence.

A major notion of IoT is the widespread existence of objects or sensors and

systems.

Since the cabling cost for such a wide spread array of devices would be too
high therefore a low-power wireless network is the most suitable.

● Home Area Network (HAN) eg. ZigBee WiFi Dash7

● Wide Area Network (WAN) eg. 2G, 3G, LTE, Optical Fibre
● Field Area Network , used for communication between customer & sub-
station.
Various IoT Communication technologies
Description of work
● Connected public lighting with smart controllers within the smart city.

Reduced consumption of energy, Greater safety, Improved availability

● City-zen: Virtual Power Plant

Improving the yield of solar panels, Balancing sustainable energy supply and demand

● City Alerts: Incident Message Exchange for emergency services

Allows rescuers have all relevant information available at a glance, because of privacy-related issues the
information is shared in a colour-coded system.

● StreetSense is an IoT

Counts passing vehicles, Tells if the street surface is dry, wet, overheating, frozen or gritted
Challenges
Conclusion
The importance of IoT concepts is undeniable in the context of smart
cities. IoT enables a volume of opportunities for smart cities & daily
activities could be extended and improved through employing them.

Likewise, the challenges arising from implementing the IoT system

have to be addressed before large scale implementation, such as the
privacy of users and residents.

There have been developments of smart cities across the world, which
can be considered as samples or pilot projects for future comprehensive
smart cities.

Thus a lot of individual projects are present globally but not an

integrated real smart city where these systems work in cacophony
hence this study will help identify best practices that can work as a
system.
