Introduction
• It is used to control the ac output frequency.
• By control the frequency speed of motor can be
change.
• A setup of ac to dc and then dc to ac is used for
change in frequency.
• VFD is used throughout the industry such as elevators
water pumps ,ventilation system.
WORKING
• First ,it convert three phase ac to dc .
• This is accomplished with diode.
• Then it cleans the dc with a capacitor.
• Next ,it will convert the dc to ac .
• This is accomplished with transistor acting as switches.
• This transistor is called as IGBT.
Block diagram of VFD
IGBT in VFD
Introduction
• It stands for insulated gate bipolar transistor.
• It is three terminal semiconductor device.
• Just as the word “gate” suggested when voltage is
applied to the gate it opens and create path to current
flow.
• If no voltage is applied or if the voltage is not high
enough the gate remains closed and their will be no
electricity flow.
• In this way ,IGBT behave like a switch.
VFD compare with plumbing system
• First look at the diode that convert ac to dc.
• This operate like a check valve in a water system.
• A check valve like a diode with electricity only allow
water to flow in one direction.
• The capacitor acts as a water filter to keep everything
clean and useable.
• The transistor act like valve, allow the VFD to adjust
the frequency to the motor by on or off the flow.
r
VFD in water plumbing system
• A water treatment plant typically has a constant flow
of water.
• However ,if the water flow demand is lower in plant
then will need to slow down the supply.
• This is achieved by using a VFD on the ac motor.
• The operator can monitor water flow and manually
adjust the VFD accordingly.
VFD with PLCs

• VFD can be controlled with PLC.

• PLC can monitor and control motor speed using VFD.
• This makes water treatment or any other process
much easier and more efficient.
• This setup can be used in any situation .

Advantages of VFD
a) It is energy cost saving .
b) It reduces the ampere drawn by the motor.
c) It provide easy speed control.
d) It provide smooth starting .
e) Limit and adjust torque.
f) Increase power factor.
g) Elimination of Mechanical Drive Components.
Disadvantage of VFD
• Cost of VFD can be relatively high depending on
how large is system.
• Dramatically increased noise.
• Excessive vibration.
Conclusion

• Using VFD, a small reduction in speed can save large

amount of energy.
• They help to reduce wear and tear.
• It can improve efficiency reduce staff and work load.
• Improve accuracy and reduce errors.
• Authorized access only, enhance security.
