History
• Paint was made with the yolk of eggs and therefore, the substance
would harden and adhere to the surface it was applied to. Pigment
was made from plants, sand, and different soils. Most paints used
either oil or water as a base.
• Later in modern ages about in 1866, Sherwin-Williams in the United
States opened as a large paint-maker and invented a paint.
• Humans have expressed themselves for more than 40,000 years using
mineral-based pigments.
What are Paints and Coatings

Definition:
A thin layer forming a solid,
cohesive and adhesive protective
layer over a surface is termed as
paint or coating.

Paints are effective in preventing

the walls rotting from damp.
Constituents of paint
• Paints contain:
Pigments:
Prime pigments used to add color and opacity.
Binder:
A polymer, that forms a matrix to hold the pigments
together.
The three most common binders used in modern paints are:
Acrylic polymers
Alklyd polymers
Epoxy polymers

Characteristics of Good Paint
• Resistance to :
Atmospheric conditions, Corrosion, water, heat etc…
• Good consistency
• Ease of application
• forming a continuous protective film
• colour stability
• Quick drying
• Protection of the substrate
• Environmentally Friendly
• Cost Effective

Some common types
Some common known paints are:
• Oil Paint
• Synthetic Paints
• Emulsion Paint
• Cellulose Paints
• Varnishes
• Water Paints(Distemper Paint)
• Special Paints
Oil paints

• Oil painting is the process

of painting with pigments
with a medium of drying
oil as the binder.
Varnishes

• Varnish is a clear transparent hard protective finish or

film. Varnish has little or no color.
• amber,
• kauri gum,
• Dammar etc.
Distemper
• Distemper is a
decorative paint and a
historical medium for painting
pictures. The binder may
be glues of vegetable or
animal origin.
Enamel paint

• Enamel paint is paint that air-dries to

a hard, usually glossy finish.

• used for coating surfaces that are

outdoors.

Pull of ADHESION Testing of Paints
Adhesion is a physical property of applied paint
and protective coatings allowing critical assets to
perform when exposed to harsh operating
condition.
Defects of paints

Blistering Bleeding

Cissing Crazing Chalking

Procedure
Tape is smoothed into place by using a pencil eraser over the area of
the incisions. Tape is removed by pulling it off rapidly back over itself as
close to an angle of 180°. Adhesion is assessed on a 0 to 5
scale. Testing for Paint Adhesion with BYK Cross Cut.

During a tape test, our highly trained and practiced experts apply
pressure-sensitive tape to cuts made in the coating and then remove it
to assess adhesion quality
Advantages

• Weather effect protection

• Prevent corrosion of metals
• Prevent wood decay
• Provide good appearance
• Provides smooth surface
Disadvantage

• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint are

considered harmful to the environment and
especially for people who work with them on a
regular basis.
