Introduction to Digitization
Digitization
“Digitizing is the process of converting features on a paper map into digital
format.”
OR
“Digitization is the process of converting analog information into a digital
format.”

Automatic Digitization (Vectorization)

It is automated raster to vector conversion using image processing and

pattern recognition techniques. In this technique computer traces all the
lines, which results in high speed and accuracy along with improved quality of
images.

Manual Digitization

It is a manual method of converting raster data into vector.

There are two major categories of manual digitization:

 On-tablet Digitization
 On-screen Digitization
04
Digitization Types

On-tablet Digitization

It is done using digitizing tablet, known as Digitizer. The operator manually

traces all the lines from his hardcopy map and creates identical digital map on
the computer. It is very time consuming and level of accuracy is also not very
good.

Digitization Types

On-Screen Digitization

The simplest way to create vectors from raster layers (soft form) is to digitize
vector objects manually straight off a computer screen using a mouse or
digitizing cursor.
06
Digitization Types

Point-Mode Digitization

 Manual way of on-screen digitizing, in which vertices are placed after

desired intervals.
 Slower, but data redundancy is least.
07
Digitization Types

Stream-Mode Digitization

 Partially automates the digitizing process.

 Instructs the digitizer control software to automatically collect vertices

every time a distance or time threshold is crossed.

 Much faster, but produces larger files with redundant coordinates.
