Refrigerant Naming Conventions

Refrigerant Naming Conventions Go through Table
15-1
[Stoecker] and do
the naming
• If refrigerants are: convention yourself

• Halocarbons (Refrigerants that contain one or more of three halogens:

chlorine, fluorine or bromine)

• Chemical formula:
𝐶𝑚 𝐻𝑛 𝐹𝑝 𝐶𝑙𝑞
• Refrigerant designated as:
If m – 1 = 0, then it is omitted
𝑅 𝑚−1 𝑛+1 𝑝 from the refrigerant name

i.e.
𝐶𝐻2 𝐹𝐶𝑙 → 𝑅031 → 𝑅31 (m = 1, n = 2, p = 1)
Refrigerant Naming Conventions Go through Table 15-2
[Stoecker]

Do yourself:
• If refrigerants are : Air
Sulfur dioxide

• Inorganic compounds (Compounds that lack C-H bonds)

• R(700+molecular weight)

• i.e. Molecular weight = (No. of N

𝑁𝐻3 → 𝑅 700 + 17 → 𝑅717 atoms)(N atomic weight)+(No.
of H atoms)(H atomic weight)
= (1)(14) + (3)(1) = 17

𝐶𝑂2 → 𝑅 700 + 44 → 𝑅744

Refrigerant Naming Conventions Go through Table 15-3
[Stoecker] and do the
naming yourself
• If refrigerants are :
• Hydrocarbons
• Chemical formula:
𝐶𝑚 𝐻𝑛 𝐹𝑝
• Refrigerant designated as:
If m – 1 = 0, then it is omitted
𝑅 𝑚−1 𝑛+1 𝑝 from the refrigerant name

i.e.
𝐶2 𝐻6 → 𝑅170 m = 2, n = 6, p = 0

𝐶𝐻4 → 𝑅050 → 𝑅50
