CHALLANGES
REMOVAL OF TEMPORARY TRESTLETS:-
1.Tempopary trestlets were provided to suports the 20 m cantilever of The truss.
2.The truss was supported to the truss throuth splindle jack Arrangement.
TUBULAR STRUCTURAL WORK:-
1.The stadium roof tubular structure was supported by 45 trusses connected by 45 inner compressive
rings and Outer Compressive rings.
2. The total scope of the roofing approx 4300mt of the tubular Pipe structure with tensile plat and
3. gutter plate. 3.The 45 truss was connected to the concrete column Through connecting plates
4. and insert plate.

For the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), redeveloping the Wankhede Stadium up to
international standards was a non-negotiable aspect. It had to be since I had decided to host the
2011 World Cup Final there.
• The illumination requirement was finalised to galvanized polygonal stadium mast with highly
efficient 2 kW sports floodlight luminaire, which would ensure high-quality floodlighting and make
it suitable for HDTV transmission.
• With such a major upgrade in such a tight deadline, MCA turned to the masters in the
illumination business, Bajaj Electricals Ltd., for a game-changing assist.
• BEL brought in a specialised project execution team for this task. The entire project was further
segregated into two major blocks to simplify the complexity of the task at hand.
CHALLANGES
Lighting Design:
•Huge canopy obstructions over the spectator’s stand, which were a part of the renovation, led
to an enormous shadow being cast on the field of play (FOP) area
•Acute space constraint at the site led to asymmetrical location of all four masts. BEL had to
adhere to requirements of vertical illuminance level w.r.t. all camera locations, balancing
between vertical and horizontal illuminance level as well as providing proper uniformity level on
the playing arena
•Also, Bajaj had to restrict light spillage as there were residential properties nearby. Light
pollution was another aspect that had to be taken into consideration while executing the project
Project Execution:
•Acute space constraint for handling the erection of masts at designated locations
•No space for movement of crane for installing masts
•Near proximity of western railway high tension line to the masts. Several objections from
railway division for the same!
•No space for storing the material at site, resulting in unnecessary back and forth and the
timelines getting affected several times
PLUS POINTS
• Wankhede stadium is among worlds’ greatest 5 Cricket Stadiums.
• Whole roof is supported on large cantilever pipe trusses covered with teflon sheets.
• Stadium have biggest dressing room than any other Stadiums.
• There is special arrangement for broadcasting screens.
• Special arrangementfor cameras, broadcasting units and press box.
• Stadium serves food at every level of each stand.

• It provides separate staircase for players, viewers and vips.

• Only stadium in india with elevators.
• Creating of such a high class stadium in India shall provide an uninterrupted Opportunity to our Cricket Hero’s and
Budding Cricketers to excel their skill in this segment of Sport in further.
• Column free stadium is an International concept, now followed in India in construction of Wankhede Stadium. The 360
degree view during a match give immense pleasure to the viewers is an USP of Wankhede Stadium.
• Construction of more similar kind of Stadiums in India would help in development of the immensely loved and popular
Game of Cricket, increasing passion towards it in our Country.
• Aesthetically appealing roof cover out of textile fabric has given an opening to new industries manufacturing Textile
fabric thereby helping in economical growth of India.
• The new concept of auctioning of spectators box, modern corporate lounges to the various businesses has begun and there
is long way for further improvisation from revenue generation point of view in India.

The stadium has these stands

•Sunil Gavaskar Stand

•North Stand
•Vijay Merchant Stand
•Tendulkar Stand
•MCA Stand
•Vitthal Divecha Stand
•Garware Stand
•Grand Stand
SALIENT FEATURES
• North and South stands are newly constructed. The structure rests on piles and on footing in few
areas.
• The RCC elements comprises of raft, retaining walls, pile caps, footings, columns, inclined deck
beam and slabs etc.
• In case of East and West stands, area admeasures approx. 3500 sq mtrs. Existing foundations and
supporting columns were strengthened for chair seating arrangement without any alteration in the
seating capacity and stadium profile in view of its close vicinity to the Western Railway track.
• The strengthening was done using fiber reinforced Kevlar by introducing composite columns.
Design of foundation for a 70 meter high mast, four in numbers, resting over pile foundation for
Ÿ
lightening the ground during nights.
• The stadium is covered with aesthetically appealing and elegantly spaced structural steel roofing.
• The challenge was to design a 22 meter cantilever and its supporting system using bent tubular hollow
steel sections fabricated out of plates of different thicknesses and of varied diameters.
• The steel roofing comprises of 45 trusses connected by compression rings.
• The total tonnage of structural steel consumed was approx. 4000 MT. Handling of these massive steel
columns and cantilevers were an uphill task. Thus, the complex and intricate design involved
detailing, bending, fabricating, transporting, lifting and erection of steel components of various sizes
to provide intended look to the roofing.
• Ÿ Due to the space constraint, the steel truss members were fabricated out of Mumbai, transported to
site and then erected using high capacity crawler mounted cranes with varying (125-250T) booms
lengths.
SALIENT FEATURES
• In totality, there were 370 such truss members. A series of 90 compression rings fabricated
using 350mm dia tubular hollow sections are connected to the roof trusses, with outer radius of the
rings being approx. 80 meters.
• Construction of a stadium with huge quantum of concrete was just impossible in a relatively short
duration, without sizable quantities of shuttering, scaffolding, staging material for RCC works and
massive temporary supporting arrangements for holding the trusses till the compression ring was
complete.
• The structural design is carried out taking into account the composite action of the columns for
earthquake resistance.
• The entire structural steel roofing was covered with PTFE coated glass tensile fabric. A special team
was flown to Sri Lanka for testing the fabric material and approving its quality.
• ŸHeavy columns sections extending beyond the top edge of the stadium and each unit weighing in
tonnes were fabricated out of three tubular hollow pipes in a triangular profile fabricated out of
various diameter MS pipes. Designing of the 22 meter cantilever and its supporting system was a real
challenge.
• Seven entrance gates, twenty staircases, eighteen lifts, and thirty-five emergency exits, ensures faster
movement and high standard of safety. The 25-meter cantilevered roof is the most interesting feature of the
stadium. It completely opens up the stands, as no pillars or supports come in the way of the spectator’s view.

The Structure
• The structure basically has four areas identified as ‘The Stands’ viz. North, South, East and West Stands.
• The East Stand abuts the Western Railway line, whereas the West Stand is towards the sea front.
• As per the new construction, North and South Stands have five levels of seating whereas the East and West Stands have
three levels.
Exposure Condition
• Exposure conditions considered in the designing of structural elements was assigned as severe as stipulated in the Code.
• The cover to reinforcement was proposed accordingly. To avoid any atmospheric action on the structural steel elements
since the stadium is on the coast, an anti-corrosive paint coating of appropriate thickness is applied to the exposed
structural steel portion.
Controlling the Field Work
• Larsen & Toubro was entrusted the contract for the entire stadium reconstruction.
• Their major scope of work for the stadium reconstruction included the following:
All Civil, RCC, structural and allied works for the reconstruction south basement and superstructure of North & South
Ÿ

stands and refurbishment of East and West Stand

Strengthening of East & West stand by means of jacketing/fiber wrapping, epoxy treatment, polymer treatment including

Tubular Structural Works

• Building the structure with its unique shape involving bending of pipes, profile cutting, cantilever with 20
meter involved several challenges and engineering expertise.
• TheNstadium roof tubular structure consists of 45 trusses connected with 45 inner compression rings and 45
outer compressions rings.
The total scope of the roofing structure was approx 4300MT of the tubular pipe structure with the tensile
plate and the gutter plates. The 45 truss was connected to the concrete columns through connecting plates and
insert plates.
• The scope of the work was complete detailing, bending, fabrication and erection of the fabricated
components. Design of the connections of the trusses and the connecting members was proposed in such a way
so as to increase the speed of erection.

North Stand
Any and every discussion on the Wankhede is incomplete without a mention of the iconic
North Stand. Offering a 75-degree view, long-offish (fine-legish if the bowler is running into
you), so to speak and home to the ‘North Stand Gang’, its occupants have been the most
knowledgeable. So much so that they can call a slower ball from up above

Sunil Gavaskar Pavilion

To the left of North Stand is what used to be officially called ‘East Stand’. That’s how it’s
known colloquially, even today. Named after one of the greatest opening batsmen of all
time, it is the ‘common’ man’s enclosure. This stand gives you the best entertainment at
pocket-friendly prices. And, yes, it doesn’t have a roof, so you’re bound to fight the sun. This
enclosure abuts the Western Railway tracks. It is a delight to be here on an MI match day,
because many a six lands here. For the record, Gavaskar would first acknowledge the
cheers from the East Stand upon reaching a milestone.

Vijay Merchant Pavilion

Sunil Gavaskar Stand, and named after the founder of the Bombay School of Batsmanship, the Vijay Merchant Pavilion is also known as the
‘West Stand’. Some of the seats here are reserved for the members of the three original gymkhanas of Mumbai: PJ Hindu, Islam and Parsi

MCA Pavilion
It pays to find a seat at the MCA Pavilion. Thronged by youngsters who spend more time watching who’s walking up and down the
dressing room stairs, this enclosure is a selfie-seeker’s delight. Who knows, Rohit Sharma could be in the mood to oblige you! That’s not all.
The MCA Pavilion offers a fantastic view and is usually occupied by ‘cricket people’.

Grand Stand
Right above the bowler’s arm: that’s how simply one can explain the view from the top tier of the Grandstand. Situated on top of the
dressing rooms, it is where you want to be. Watch out for the straight hits over the sight screen
Garware Pavilion
was being built in 1974, the Garware Group of Industries had contributed a whopping Rs 12 lakh to the cause. And the Mumbai Cricket
Association rightly honoured its benefactors. It is arguably the most high-profile pavilion at the Wankhede, replete with a grand entrance.
The Wankhede also houses the Garware Club House, a recreational facility to the who’s who of the city. If you ever meet the gift fairy, ask
her for a ticket to the Garware Pavilion. You’ll love the experience
