 Beginning to separate from the parent, yet
running back frequently to be sure the parent
is still there.
 Ritualistic: rituals are a form of comfort and
control over their world
 Easy to be frustrated tempertantrum
 Three stage of separation anxiety exist:
1. Protest
2. Despair
3. Detachment (denial)

 Loss of control
activity limits
decreased opportunities for choices
interrupted rituals  a feeling of powerlessness
Nursing intervention
 Nursing goals: care of the Hospitalized
Toddler:
1. Promoting continued positive parent-child
relationship
2. Encouraging toddler’s sense of trust
3. Facilitating autonomy
4. Assisting with mastery of threatening
experiences
5. Promoting maximum adjustment to the
hospital experience
