RIZAL’S LIFE IN THE ASIAN COUNTRIES

Pre-Test: Answer the following questions below

1. Why did Rizal leave his family and friends for the second time?
 Jose Rizal was forced to leave the country for the second time, due to that he
was hounded by powerful enemies such as the friars. Rizal left the country for the second
time because of the advice of Governor General Emilio Terrero. He was advised to leave the
Philippines a second time by no less than Governor General Emilio Terrero because he
stirred up a hornet's nest when he got involved in the Protesta de Calamba affair.

 Rizal had to leave the Philippines because he had already been marked man for
the friars. He left for his own good and to make sure that his family and friends will never be
harmed.
2. What impressions did Rizal have of Japan?
 The things which favorably impressed Rizal in Japan were: 1. The beauty of the
country – its flowers, mountains, streams, and scenic panoramas. 2. The cleanliness,
politeness, and industry of the Japanese people.

Activity 1

Could Rizal become a hero if he changed his nationality? Why or Why not?

 Yes, because he fought for freedom in a silent but powerful way. He expressed his
love for the Philippines through his novels, essays and articles rather than through the use of
force or aggression. Instead he used his writings to open the eyes of the Filipinos.

Furthermore, we even considered General McArthur as a hero in the Philippines and his
even a full-blooded American. Nationality does not change the fact that he has given us the
opportunity to experience liberality.

Self-Evaluation: Provide your answer on the table below.

1. Give the real reason/purpose why Jose Rizal wanted to settle in Borneo.
 Rizal was thought to consider relocating his family to North Borneo where he
plans to establish a Filipino settlement geared towards agriculture with himself as their
leader.
2. Tell if changing one’s citizenship can be considered a betrayal to one’s nationalism. Justify your
answer.
 I think it’s important to understand though that in many cases you needn’t
change your citizenship in order to become a citizen of another country. Many countries
allow dual and multiple citizenship these days, meaning you can generally gain another
citizenship without losing your birth citizenship. If it changing you citizenship it’s not about
betrayal to nationalism it is a choice of oneself.
3. Tell if Governor General Despujol was a friend or a traitor to Jose Rizal.
 Personally, the Governor General Despojul simply because he never attentively
respond to any of Jose Rizal’s request to establish a Filipino settlement in Borneo. He is also
the one who issued a decree deporting Rizal to Dapitan. If he does not have any sentiments
for the fellow countrymen of Rizal then he will be considered as a foe for Jose Rizal.

Post-Test: With your knowledge in this chapter, answer the following questions below.

1. Create an essay based on this situation. “If you were in the shoes of Rizal which would you
prefer your happiness to your intimate love to sweetheart or to your countrymen sufferings
from the maltreatment of the colonizers?”
Happiness is something that can be given and taken away. As teenagers we have already
experienced happiness and the bitter taste of loneliness. It is not an easy question to answer
whether you want to carry the burden of the people over your happiness. Life was never fair
from the start. So why would I waste my life thinking that I could have done something. I would
gladly lay my life to save my country and my fellow countrymen. What a great honor to serve
my country. What a great honor it is.

Life is something to be cherished regardless of your status and theirs. Yet our enemies
would gladly kill for their entertainment. Unconditional love is what I feel for our country. Some
may crawl and ask for mercy but I on the other will never gravel on their feet and see their faces
full of pleasure. I am indebted to my motherland. What better way to repay her than to fight
and die for her freedom.

Even if I will be branded as a criminal I will still continue for her liberty. My fellow
countrymen are suffering. Why would I leave them be. Ones life is merely a sacrifice for saving a
million innocent children. Rizal stated that the young ones will be our future. If I cannot do
something to save the children is there something for us to look forward to? What a great honor
it is to serve and fight for my country.
2. Who was O-Sei-San? What made attracted to her? How did Rizal come to know her? What
made O-Sei- San fall in love with Rizal?
When Rizal was in Tokyo a few days after he had moved to the Azabu district in 1888,he
spotted a pretty Japanese girl walking past the legion gate. He was captured by the lady's regal
air and charisma and endeavored to find ways to meet her. The girl's name was Seiko Usui. She
lived with her parents and often took afternoon walks by the legation. Rizal waited by the gate
one afternoon and introduced himself. An Exploration of Beauty Rizal and O-Sei-San, as he
fondly called her, met almost daily.

They toured the beautiful city spots, enjoyed the scenery, and visited the picturesque
shrines. Rizal was then a lonely young physician, disillusioned by his frustrated romance with
Leonor Rivera and burdened by soured hopes for justice in his country. O-Sei-San provided the
beautiful escape that he deeply needed, and he saw in her the qualities of his ideal woman. He
was her first love. But because of his deep affection for her, Rizal was almost tempted to settle
down in Japan. Conveniently enough, he was also offered a good position at the Spanish
Legation during that time. Rizal, however, had set his sights on other matters. He decided to
leave Japan and forget his romance,
