SELF-EVALUATION: Provide the answer in the following table below.

1. Give the real reason/purpose why Jose Rizal wanted to settle in Borneo.
 The purpose why Jose Rizal wanted to settle in Borneo is because he planned
on moving his family and 300 Filipino families in a wilderness called “New
Calamba”. He negotiated successfully to the authorities in Borneo and its
government was willing to give a hundred thousand acres of land free for all
charges in the span of 999 years.

2. Tell if changing one’s citizenship can be considered a betrayal to one’s nationalism.

Justify your answer.
 Changing one’s citizenship doesn’t mean it’s betrayal to one’s nationalism.
Some people migrate and look for better opportunities and jobs on other
countries for the betterment of their family and financial status. Nowadays, we
can see a lot of overseas Filipino workers all around the world, should we give
them the title of betrayal even if their only purpose is to improve their living
status? No. Even if we change our citizenship, a persons’ love and nationalism to
its country will never fade. As long as he/she continues to treat its country with
respect then there will be no problem with it. We can only call it betrayal if one
person intentionally chose to disregard and harm its country’s presence and
credibility.

3. Tell if Governor General Despujol was a friend or a traitor to Jose Rizal.

 Governor General Despujol was a traitor to Jose Rizal because he ordered his
officers to arrest Rizal in Fort Santiago due to his attempt to decatholize the
Spanish Philippine Islands. However, Rizal did not do this treason because he was
just framed by the friars through planting anti-leaflets in his luggage.

POST-TEST: With your knowledge in this chapter, answer the following questions below.

1. Create an essay based on this situation. “If you were in the shoes of Rizal which would
you prefer your happiness to your intimate love to sweetheart or to your countrymen
sufferings from the maltreatment of the colonizers?”
 Love and sacrifice, these two words are both meaningful and strong in all
situations of our lives. Having the chance to be loved makes things look even
better while sacrifice carries the depth of expensing oneself for the benefit of
others. But if I were to choose between the two, I would pick my happiness into
my intimate love to sweetheart than to my countrymen that are suffering from
the maltreatment of the colonizers. Why? Because I believe that love is one of
the greatest things that a man can experience. It can make people do good
things and introduced to the freedom that it gives.

It will be hard for me to engage myself more from difficulties and sufferings
that the colonizers can give if I contradict with their system, I would be harmed
and even tortured to death just like other rebellions and people. As humans, it is
sometimes not wrong to be selfish in choosing your own happiness in picking
love over sacrifice for the benefit of your countrymen because we deserve the
satisfaction and happiness that the love we receive from our sweethearts and
even family or friends.

2. Who was O-Sei-San? What made attracted to her? How did Rizal come to know her?
What made O-Sei- San fall in love with Rizal?
 O-Sei-San was the daughter of a samurai Japanese man that taught Jose Rizal
how to create a “Su-Mie” that is known as a Japanese art. What made Rizal to be
attracted to her were her intelligence, beauty, charm, and modesty. Rizal met O-
Sei-San during his work at the Spanish Legislation in Tokyo. He asked a gardener
to introduce him to her until their friendship bloomed into romance. She fell in

courteous, being a man dignity, and a man of versatile talents.
