MODULE 8: THE SCHOLAR’S JOURNEY

Learning Activity 1

Direction:

1. On a sheet of paper, draw a timeline of Rizal’s journey as a scholar. Be able to include ten places he
visited.
2. Write in the left column the names of ten individuals whom Rizal met. During his journey. Write in the
right column the kind of relation or affiliation they had with him.

1. Marcelo H. Del Pilar Rizal met him in Spain. He is an illustrado and a
leading a leading figure of propaganda movement.

respected member of the Freemasons.
2 Dr. Niscase Rizal met him in France. He is a famous Parisan
doctor. Rizal studies his work and also worked for
him.
3 Dr. Otto Becker Rizal met him in Germany. He is another well
known opthalmologist. Rizal worked for him as an
assistant.
4 Jose Maria Basa A Filipino resident in Hong Kong. He also toured
Rizal in Macao.
5 Jose Slanz de Veranda A Spaniard who served as a secretary of Gov.
Gen. Terrero and became a spy by shadowing
Rizal’s movements in Hong Kong.
6 Tetcho Suehiro A fighting Japanese journalist who was forced into
exile by the government . Met Rizal on the Belgic
and became friends.
7 Maximo Viola A very good friend of Rizal. The saviour of Noli Me
Tangere because he helped Rizal when he
became near destitute.
8 Mariano Ponce Another famous figure in propaganda movement.
Also the co-founder of La Solidaridad together with
Marcelo del Pilar.
9 Prof. Blumentritt A kind-hearted Austrian professor. Developed a
lifelong friendship with Rizal.
10 Dr. Louis de Weckert A leading French opthalmologist. Rizal worked for
him as an assistant.

Summative Test

1. Compare and contrast Jose Rizal’s clinical experiences with Louis De Wecker and Otto Becker. Write
their similarities and differences.

Similarities
He experienced training in ophthalmology and worked for them as an assistant.

Differences

Rizal chose to specialize in ophthalmology and worked in the eye clinic of Dr. Louis De Wecker, a famous
French ophthalmologist. He introduced ophthalmoscopy into France and advanced ocular surgery. He
modified cataract and strabismus surgery, devised a new method of enucleation, advocated sclerotomy for
the treatment of glaucoma, and was the first to use the termfiltration. He worked for Dr. De Wecker from
November 1885 to February 1886.While in February 1886, Rizal moved to Heidelberg. Augenklinik (Eye
Clinic) of Otto Becker Becker (1828-1890) was professor of ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg
from 1868 to 1890 and helped make this department one of the best in Germany. Rizal spent the next 6
months working as assistant to Becker.

Compare and contrast Jose Rizal’s experiences at the Universities of Heidelberg and Leipzig. Give their
similarities and differences.

Similarities

He attended lectures and used his literary skills.

Differences

He arrived in Leipzig on August 14, 18986, on board a train. Part of his activities in this city was attendance
at the lectures given by German professors in history and psychology. He came to know Prof. Friedrich
Ratzel Dr. Hans Meyer. He translated Schiller's William Tell into Tagalog. He worked as a proofreader in a
publishing company to augment his allowance. He stayed in the city for two months.

Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historic city in Germany famous for its old university and romantics
surroundings. He became popular among the Germans because they found out that he was a good chess
player. He worked at the University Eye Hospital under the direction of Dr. Otto Becker, distinguished
German ophthalmologist. During weekends, Rizal visited the scenic spot around Heidelberg, including:
The famous Heidelberg Castle, The Romantic Neckar River, The Theater, The old churches. “TO THE
FLOWERS OF HEIDELBERG” In April 22, 1886, Rizal wrote a fine poem entitled “A Las Flores de
Heidelberg” (To the Flowers of Heidelberg) because he was fascinated by the blooming flowers along the
Neckar River, which is the light blue flower called “forget- me-not”.
