Cohesive devices are words or expressions that


are used to join two ideas or two parts of a
sentence or two different sentences or a number
of sentences in a paragraph thematically and
meaningfully. It is sometimes called linking
words, linkers, connectors, discourse markers, or
transitional words in English Grammar.

Types of Cohesive Devices:

1. Addition – and, also, moreover, in addition


Other examples: as well as, furthermore, along
with

Examples:
- Maria fails to eat her breakfast and she
got a stomachache.

- She’s a talented actress and also a fine


singer.

2. Contrast – despite, but, however, yet, though


Other examples: nevertheless, in contrast, by
comparison, whereas, instead of

Examples:
- The Christmas tree is natural, but it is
expensive.
- Jose is very smart, yet he cannot pass
his English class.

3. Choice – or, either – or, neither – nor

Examples:
- Would you prefer coffee or tea?

- Either my mother or my father will call.

4. Result/Effect – consequently, so, thus,


therefore
Examples:
- The cell phone is thin and light,
therefore, it is very convenient to carry around.

- There are no more chairs available, so


you’ll have to stand.

5. Cause/Reason – because, as, since
