SUPERCAPACITOR

• A supercapacitor (SC) is a high-

capacity capacitor with a
capacitance value much higher than
other capacitors

• Bridges the gap

between electrolytic
capacitors and rechargeable
batteries.

• Store extremely large amounts of

electrical charge

Characteristics of a good supercapacitor

• High Capacitance (100 - 12 000 F)

• high power density (1000-2000 W kg-1)
• high power delivery
• rapid charge-discharge rates,
• long cycle life
• high power delivery
• Long operating Life (5,000 to 50,000 hrs)
• cycle efficiency
• extreme long cycles(>105cycles)
• high energy density (20-100 Wh kg-1)

A cyclic voltammogram shows the fundamental differences between
Structure and function of an ideal double-layer capacitor. Applying a voltage to the static capacitance (rectangular) and pseudocapacitance (curved)
capacitor at both electrodes a Helmholtz double-layer will be formed separating the ions in
the electrolyte in a mirror charge distribution of opposite polarity

• Provide peak power and backup power
• Reduce battery size, weight and cost
• Enable low/high temperature operation [-40°C to +85C°]
• fast charging ability
• Offers longer Service and long life (10 to 15 years compare to 5-10
years of Li-ion battery) ; offers virtually unlimited cycle life and
can be cycled millions of time.
• Reduces size of the battery, its weight and consecutively cost.
