BAHAY NA BATO:

THE REALM OF ARISTOCRATIC DOMESTICITY


 Colonial Filipino Noble House

 A mixture of native Filipino, Spanish and Chinese influences

 Combined the elements of the indigenous and Hispanic


building traditions.

 Retains the bahay kubo’s basic characteritics such as the steep


hip roof, elevated quarters, post-and-lintel construction, and
maximizd ventilation.

I. Tanchanco Bahay na Bato
A historically significant Bahay na Bato in Malolos. It was the
home of Don Tomas Tanchanco Gobernadorcillo of Malolos
in 1879, Juez de Paz 1887-1889 and was the reformist father
of the 2 Tanchanco sisters who were part of the Women of
Malolos. According to National Historical Comission of the
Philippines, the Tanchanco house was a centre of the reform
movements secret meetings disguised as parties. The
parties were attended by the illustrados, local officials,
prominent families and foreign dignitaries. Jose Burgos
visited the house in 1869. Tanchanco's hosted a party with
guest Jose Rizal twice in 1888 and 1892

II. Tansojoy Bahay Na Bato

Dona Tansojoy House in Malolos is among the


remaining Bahay Na Bato in Malolos City, Bulacan that
has been preserved.

III. Casa Comunidad de Tayabas

Casa Comunidad de Tayabas was restored by the


National Historical Institute. It is now a museum that is
open to the public located in Tayabas Quezon .

IV. Bahay na Tisa
• Literally meaning “House of Tiles,” the Balay na Tisa
was built in 1859 by Don Roman Sarmiento and Dona
Canarias. It is the embodiment of the bahay na bato
tradition found throughout the archipelago, and
features ornate architectural designs and heirloom
furnishings.
• On September 4, 2009, Balay na Tisa was officially
recognized as a National Heritage House.
• Bahay na Tisa is located in Carcar, Cebu.

V. Luz Katigbak House

• Starting out with a bahay na bato design typical of


Spanish architecture in the 19th century, the Luz-
Katigbak house was built between 1862 to 1863 and
was one of several established and owned by Don
Norberto Calao Katigbak.

• Luz-Katigbak house is located in Lipa, Batangas.

VI. Syquia Mansion

• Syquia Mansion, also called Bahay na Bato, the well-


preserved home of Doña Alicia Syquia, wife of
former Philippine president Elpidio Quirino, that was
built in 1830.

• Syquia Mansion is located in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
