◦ The first Philippine Republic was the first


independent republic in Asia by Asians.

◦ The United States wanted to make our


country a colony after Spain left.

◦ But the Filipinos wanted independence.


After all, they won the revolution against
Spain, but did not turn out that way in
history.

Philippines and also started making a new
constitution for the Philippines.

September 15, 1898 - 85 Filipinos started to meet in a


revolutionary congress at Barasoain Church, Malolos
Bulacan.

Pedro A. Paterno – He is the president of the Malolos


Dr.

Congress.

Felipe Calderon – The author of the Malolos Constitution.

General Aguinaldo – He proclaimed the constitution of the


first Philippine Republic.

 January 23, 1899 – The first Philippine


Republic was inaugurated at Barasoain
Church, Malolos, Bulacan.
- Aguinaldo was sworn in as
president of the first Republic at the church
altar.

“ great is this day, glorious this date, and


forever memorable this moment in which our
beloved people are raised to the joy of
independence .“

 The birth of the new nation was celebrated at


Malolos and all over the Philippines.

 It was truly a democracy because it had a free


press:
• El Heraldo de la Revolution
• La Independencia

The new government also had diplomats


abroad and Felipe Agoncillo is the first Filipino
diplomat.

◦ The First Philippine Republic lived only for


two years from January 23, 1899 – March
23, 1901.

◦ The Philippine Declaration of


Independence on June 12, 1898. it is the
country’s national day ( ARAW NG
KALAYAAN ) Day of Our Freedom.

◦ It was ended when Aguinaldo was


captured by the Americans.

Grayson, a sharp shooter from the first
Nebraska volunteers, shot and killed a
Filipino soldier.

◦ Aguinaldo and his generals were


surprised because they’re not ready for
battle.

 The news flashed to United States.

 Allthe American public stirred Anti-


Filipino feeling.

 February 6, 1899 – 2 days after the


shooting incident, The Treaty of Paris
were passed by the American Senate.

 The second fight for independence by


the Filipinos, but it was the first
American war on Asian soil.

 The United States became a world power


by winning this war.

 February 5, 1899 – The American navy


bombarded the Filipino positions to
Manila.

 March 31, 1899 – The Americans captured


Malolos, which was then the capital of the
First Philippine Republic.

 General Aniceto Lacson and Juan


Araneta – They organized the “Republic of
Negros” on November 27, 1898.

 General Henry C. Lawton – He is the


famous hero of the American Civil War and
the conqueror of the American Indian war
chief Geronimo.

Aguinaldo Ordered the Filipinos to Fight a


Guerilla Warfare

◦ The Filipinos fight with old rifles and


guns, bamboo spears and bolos while
the Americans fought with cannons,
machine guns, automatic rifles and
plenty of ammunition and supplies

◦ Aguinaldo’s guerilla warfare was earlier


than Mao Zedong’s Chinese guerillas
(1940s) and Ho Chi Minh’s vietnamese
guerillas (1970s).

 The Filipino generals and officials of


the first Philippine Republic lost or
were captured by the enemy.

 Headingofficial of the Philippine

deported to Guam.

 One of them was Apolinario Mabini


and Aguinaldo’s Prime Minister.

 Gregorio del Pilar and his men


defended the Tirad Pass so Aguinaldo
and his staff could escape the
American.

 March 23, 1901 – Day when the fine


Americans pretended to be Prisoners
of war of the Filipinos so that they
could enter the secret camp.
The Capture of Aguinaldo

 He is the
General Arthur Macarthur –
American military governor, at
Malacanang Palace.

 April 19, 1901 – He take the oath of


allegiance to the United States and this
meant that Aguinaldo surrendered to
the Americans.

 General Simeon Ola – He is the last


Filipino general who surrendered to the
Americans on September 25, 1903.
