INTRODUCTION

• Floors are horizontal elements of building structures which divide building into different
levels for the purpose of creating more accommodation with in the restricted space, one
above the other and also provide support to the occupants, furniture and equipment of a
building.
• A floor finish is a liquid which is applied to a resilient tile floor and dries to a hard, durable
and smooth film. This film is about the thickness of waxed paper and is expected to protect
and extend the life of the floor while providing an attractive appearance and slip resistant
surface.

Linoleum
Linoleum is made up from natural ingredients, linseed
oil, ground cork, resin, fillers and pigments. These are
baked slowly at high temperatures and pressed onto a
jute or Hessian backing.
It is warm and quiet underfoot. It requires sealing with a
polish as if water penetrates under the surface it will lift.
It comes in sheet or tile form and is fixed to the floor
with an adhesive.
Pros: Linoleum flooring is made with biodegradable
materials including cork powder and linseed oil. It
produces no harmful VOCs and is an
ecofriendly choice. It’s a tough flooring that resists
stains and wear, and it comes in many vibrant colors.
Cons: It can be dented by high heels and furniture legs,
and it can turn yellowish if repeatedly exposed to
sunlight. It’s susceptible to excessive moisture, so it’s not
recommended for laundry rooms and bathrooms.
Rubber
Rubber is made from natural or synthetic rubber, fillers and pigments. It is available in single
colours with relief patterns or marbled. It comes in sheet form or tiles cut from sheets. The
sheet form is available with foam rubber backing which provides a form of sound
insulation. It has good wear properties, is resilient and tough, warm and quiet underfoot. It
can be loose laid on concrete.
Pros: Rubber flooring comes in many styles and colours. It’s made in sheets and DIY-
friendly tiles that fit together with interlocking edges. It blocks sound, is moisture-proof and
it’s comfortable underfoot.
Cons: It’s not a high-end look, and some people are sensitive to the smell of rubber.

Cork
Cork is a natural product that comes from the bark of the evergreen oak. It is most
commonly available in tiles. These are cut from blocks of granulated cork that has been

Pros: It’s a renewable resource that’s harvested from trees, so cork is an eco-
friendly flooring. It has a warm, vibrant look and is naturally resilient, so it feels
good underfoot. It comes as tiles or planks for DIY installation.
Cons: Sharp objects can tear it and high heels may dent it, and it needs to be
refinished with sealers on a regular basis. It’s susceptible to moisture, so keep it
out of bathrooms and laundry rooms.
Poly Vinyl Chloride
• About: PVC sheet used as flooring material is inexpensive and used in a variety of
buildings covering the home, hospitals, offices, schools, etc. There are two kinds of
PVC floorings. One is flexible, which is available in sheet form and the other is rigid
which is available in standard tile sizes.
• Sizes and Thickness:
• Sheets and rolls: The standard width of flooring' sheets or rolls in continuous
lengths shall be 1000 mm, 1500 mm and 2000 mm.
• Tiles: The tiles shall be 250 rum, 300 mm, 600 mm and 900 mm square.
• Thickness: The standard thickness of floor covering shall be 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm,
2·5 mm and 3.0 mm
• Rate per sq. ft.: Rs 20/- to Rs 100/- per sq. ft.
• Installation or laying charges: RS 5 /- per sq. ft. approx..
• Merits: Tough vinyl flooring is impervious to water and its resilient construction feels
good underfoot. It’s relatively inexpensive. Vinyl plank flooring can mimic real wood
and tile.
• De-merits: Vinyl can’t quite shake that synthetic look. Vinyl flooring manufacturing is
not eco-friendly.

Terrazzo
This is a composite material made up of cement
and marble aggregate,
it is then mixed and poured in situ onto a concrete
base.
It is then ground waxed and polished. It has a
mosaic look.
It can also be premade and is available in slabs or
tiles.
It is very hard wearing, if it is polished or wet it is
very slippery.
It is very useful in commercial situations i.e. malls
and shopping centers as it is very durable and easy
to clean.
• Vitrified Tiles
• Material: clay, quartz, feldspar and silica, which make vitreous
surface
• About: Vitrified tile is a ceramic tile with very low porosity. It is
an alternative to marble and granite flooring. Vitrified tiles are
often used outdoors due to their water and frost resistance. There
are four types of Vitrified tiles - Soluble salt, Double charge, Full
Body, Glazed.
• Sizes: 300mm x 300mm and 600mm x 600mm
• Rate per sq. ft.: Rs 23/- to Rs 115/- per sq. ft.
• Installation or laying charges: RS 20 /- per sq. ft.
• Merits: they are durable, easy cleaning, bright, thick , non-porous,
cost-effective,
• De-merits: not eco-friendly, expensive installation, can’t be
repaired etc.
• Best for spaces like: kitchens; bathrooms, living rooms etc.

• CERAMIC TILES
Material: clay and sand
About: Ceramic tile is made up of sand, natural products,
and clays and once it has been moulded into shape they are
then fired in a kiln. When making ceramic tiles they can
either be glazed or unglazed, but the majority of
homeowners have glazed ceramic tiles in their home.
Sizes : Ceramic tiles are available in a huge quantity of
sizes, according to the individual’s needs. Starting from
200mm x 300mm , 200mm x 600mm upto 980mm x 2000mm
and 1000mm x 1000mm.
Rate per sq. ft.: Rs 28/- to Rs 100/- per sq. ft.
Installation or laying charges: RS 15 /- per sq. ft.
Merits: Ceramic tile flooring comes in an enormous array of
colours and styles — it’s a designer’s favourite medium.
Glazed ceramic tile flooring is durable, impervious to
moisture and resists stains and scratches.
De-merits: The hardness of ceramic tile underfoot isn’t to
everyone’s liking. Grout lines require constant maintenance.

• FALSE FLOORING :
• A FALSE FLOORING IS also called raised floor (also raised flooring) is a type of
floor used in office buildings with a high requirement for servicing, such as IT
data centres, to carry cables, wiring, electrical supply and sometimes air
conditioning or chilled water pipes. Additional structural support and lighting
are often provided when a floor is raised enough for a person to crawl or even
walk beneath.
• This type of floor consists of a gridded metal framework or under structure of
adjustable-height legs called pedestals, that provide support for individual
floor panels which are usually 2×2 feet or 60×60cm in size. The height of the
legs/pedestals is dictated by the volume of cables and other services provided
beneath, but typically arranged for a clearance of at least six inches or 15cm.

HARD WOOD FLOORING
A solid hardwood flooring quite simply is a flooring made
from many numbers of different types of tree or species
of tree but is manufactured from one single piece of
wood.

Thickness : 8mm and 12mm

Rates: Rs 100/- upto Rs 1000/-

Pros: It’s beautiful, warm, long-lasting flooring goes with


any décor. Solid wood flooring can be refinished multiple
times.
Cons: Hardwood flooring is susceptible to moisture —
it’s not for bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements.
It requires constant maintenance to retain its looks.

Best for: main living areas; hallways; kitchens

NON-WOVEN CARPET
Material: FELT
About: Nonwovens are unique, high-tech, engineered fabrics made
from fibres and which are used across a wide range of applications
and products. Nonwovens are innovative, versatile and
indispensable.
Sizes : Non woven carpets are available in a different colour and
thickness. Starting from 3mm , 4.5mm , 5mm.

Rate per sq. ft.: Rs 15/- to Rs 22/- per sq. ft.


Installation or laying charges: RS 5 /- per sq. ft.
Merits:
1,aeration filtration 2,absorbent insulation waterproof 3,not
scalable 4,feel good, soft light 5, elastic recovery without cloth
direction 6, compared with the production of textile fabrics high
production speed, low price, 7, can be produced in large quantities
and so on.
De-merits: 1,compared with the textile cloth, strength and
durability is poor, 2,can not be washed as 3, as other fabrics. The
fibres are arranged in a certain direction, so it is easy to split from
the right angle.

• Product: Artificial grass carpet
• Material: Artificial Turf
• About: Artificial turf is a surface of synthetic fibres made
to look like natural grass. It is most often used in arenas
for sports that were originally or are normally played on
grass. However, it is now being used on residential lawns
and commercial applications as well. The main reason is
maintenance—artificial turf stands up to heavy use, such
as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming.
