Lateral loads are live loads that are act parallel to
the ground; that is, they are horizontal forces
acting on a structure. The most common types are:

• Wind load

• Seismic load

Lateral Load Resisting Systems

• Requirements

3
Lateral Load resisting Systems

• Special Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF)

• Shear Wall System

• Combined System

4
Special Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF)
• A moment
resisting
frame
specially
detailed to
provide
ductile
behavior.
5
Shear Wall System

• a shear wall is a vertical

element of a lateral force
resisting system that is
designed to resist in-plane
lateral forces, typically wind
and seismic loads.

6
Dual System

A dual system is a structural system

resistance to lateral loads is provided by a
specially detailed
moment-resisting frame and shear walls or
braced frames.
Both shear walls and frames participate in
resisting the lateral
loads resulting from earthquakes or win.
