Classification of Materials
Handling Operation
• Manual Handling
– consists of any hand operated handling,
transporting and packaging of products.

• Mechanical Handling
– pertains to more rigid, powered and non-
powered mechanics mainly for handling bulky
and heavy items.

Manual Handling Methods

• Manual handling methods are highly

susceptible to injuries and accidents that
not only lead to personal injury
• Manual handling is riskier than one might
think. It could lead to strains, sprains,
wounds, fractures, and hernias.
• Always stop and think before lifting any
load and ask yourself whether there is an
even safer way to do the job.

– Look forward to keep back straight
– Position the load close to the body
– Maintain a firm grip on the load

– Keep arms in front of the body
– Turn feet in the direction of the
movement and do not twist

• Chains
– do not let chains get kinked, knotted or
twisted.
• Steel and plastic straps
– make sure straps are not too loose or tight.

– any bulky, awkward or delicate items.
– Position it in such a way that it won’t pinch or
crush any part of the body when it slips.
• Ropes is common in handling materials
– One has to know what particular rope can
handle particular tasks/loads.
– keep rope in good condition all the time.

Mechanical Handling
Mechanical handling could be categorized
into two:
– lifting equipment
– transport equipment.

Steps in Solving Materials
Handling Problems
• What are to be moved?
• Direction to be moved?
• Frequency to be moved?
• Volume to be moved?
– With this situation,
• location of the storage
• with respect to its movement:
• Use of special handling equipment

Steps in Solving Materials
Handling Problems
• Minimize time and effort, the distance to
be moved must be considered
• Minimize manual handling.
• Decide for material handling procedure
– manual
– mechanical handling,
• Depending on the circumstances and
characteristics of the materials.
