Digital Library Definition
Many meanings (many communities) (Edie
Rasmussen, August 2009)
may refer to a collection of digital works
may refer to organization or system managing the digital
collection
in LIS community, sometimes seen as a modern version
of the “traditional” library (cf. “hybrid library”)
in CS community, focus may be on distributed
multimedia information systems
Schwartz (2000) reports that students in a digital library course found 64
different definitions.

Librarians see libraries as organizations that select, collect, organize,

conserve, preserve, and provide access to information on behalf of a
community of users. From their point of view, libraries are employing yet
another delivery system for another information form. In this sense digital
library connotes ‘future library’ and carries a sense of continuity with the
past.

But definitions from the research community, especially from computer

scientists, tend to take a narrower view of ‘library’ that emphasizes
databases and retrieval at the expense of the broader library service and
conservation roles
Definition of a digital library (Borgman,
1999)
Digital libraries are a set of electronic resources and
associated technical capabilities for creating,
searching, and using information
Any medium (text, images, sounds; static or dynamic
images)
Exist in distributed networks
Contain data, descriptive metadata, and administrative
metadata
Digital Library Contents
Overview of digital library content
Purchased/licensed materials
 Electronic journals
 Electronic databases

 Licensing and support issues

Institutional materials
 ePrints and Open Archives Initiative

Locally digitized materials

Intellectual rights issues (RN)
Is the Web a Digital Library?
According to Jose-Marie Griffiths,
the Web is not a library because:
It is lacking standards and
validation
It has minimal cataloging
It does not yield effective
retrieval of information
(See J.-M. Griffiths, “Why the Web is
not a library”, FID Review 1(1): 13-20
(1999)

ICT in Bangladesh
First Mainframe computer came to Bangladesh in
1964.
Internet came late in Bangladesh, with UUCP e-mail
beginning in 1993 and IP connectivity in 1996.
SEA-ME-WE-4 submarine cable connectivity 21 May
2006.
According to the Internet World Stats as of September,
2009 there are currently 556,000 internet users in
Bangladesh and the internet penetration is 0.4%.
Mobile Teledensity 32.04%

Status of ICT in Libraries of Bangladesh
1980s considered as the beginning of the
automation era as far as libraries and information centers in
Bangladesh are concerned.
International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research,
Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) Library and Agricultural Information
Centre (AIC) are pioneers in creating bibliographic databases
on specialized fields using microcomputers.
ICT in Public libraries of Bangladesh

Frustration Ahead

Among the 68 government public libraries only

14 public libraries have computers for

administrative use.

ICT in Academic Libraries of Bangladesh
ICT status of some private university libraries are quite
satisfactory. They are offering time befitting services to
its users.

ICT status in public university libraries in-comparison

with some private university libraries are not
satisfactory.
ICT in Special Libraries of Bangladesh

Special libraries of Bangladesh offer good number of

ICT based services to its users.

Special libraries based in Dhaka offer time befitting,
