Child means a person who has not completed his fourteenth year of age. This section of children are not at their teens. The children in this age group are in formative stage physically and mentally. Any kind of exploitation and oppression on them lead to child abuse. The working children of this age- group i.e. between 6-14 years of age are therefore, dubbed as ‘child labor’. The child labor has different connotations which are elucidated as follows. The term child labor though is used as a synonym for working child or child worker but more commonly it is used in a derisive sense that connotes something which is scornful, insulting and exploitative in nature. Thus the child labor is defined as any kind of work by children which interferes with their full physical development, their opportunities for desirable minimum education and their needed recreation. In true sense of the term the child labor indicates the employment of children in gainful occupation in which they are denied the opportunities of mental, moral development apart from physical growth. The child labor has some striking aspects: 1. The child should be employed in gainful occupation. 2. The work to which he is exposed must affect his physical development and it must be either injurious or dangerous to health. 3. It must deny him the opportunities for his development specially in educational sphere. 4. Any work obtained by the parent from child in their field of activities for considerable hours at the cost of child’s recreation is also covered under this notion. 5. The child should be of certain age-group not completing 14 years of age . 6. It should be of full time or part time occupation carrying remuneration or reward to augment the family income or for the material gain of child himself. Child as unpaid domestic worker. Child labor on wages. Wage labor in home based work . Bonded child labor. Self employed labor. Child worker of street children category. Migrant child labor. Economic issues or factors : 1.
