Introduction
Relevance of the Seminar-Workshop
– Requested + all believers benefit from Bible study
– God’s message regarding Jesus the Christ is vital,
urgent, and powerful, and calls mankind to obedience
Presenter
– A Christian who wants to share his understanding of
basic Bible teaching, convinced that God’s Word
provides fundamental certainty and clarity and hope
to a world that desperately needs such a message
Approach & Material
– Discuss each subject area in order via presentation
format, allowing for a 40-minute Q/A session at end
– Workbooks contain a copy of the presentation slides,
reference material, & note sheets for the Q/A session
4
Objectives
Rightly show the information (2Tim 2:14)
– my aim is to present core Scripture truths aptly,
accurately, fairly and boldly
Let the text do the convicting (Heb 4:12)
– the written Word, when read and studied with a
humble heart, has God’s transforming power
Urge your personal search (Acts 17:11)
– you need to be convinced by your own study and
self-examination, so check everything out
Give glory to God (Mark 2:12)
– God is pleased when His Truth is proclaimed, and
delighted when His Word takes root in a human life
5
Assumptions
Scripture is the only authoritative
source – anything else is man’s work
– Bible text takes priority over church authority or
religious tradition or the writing of men (2Thes 2:13)
Our English translations are sufficiently
accurate – they are a reliable source
– different translations bring their own strengths and
weaknesses; thus no single translation should be
given pre-eminence; all translations (as distinct
from paraphrases) can contribute to understanding
Reasoning and pondering are required –
and thinking must be logical and consistent
– Making sense is expected (e.g., Is 1:18,43:9, 1Cor 11:14)

1. Resurrected
• in fact Christ has been raised (1Cor 15:20)
• impossible for Death to hold him (Acts 2:24)
• first principle teaching (1Cor 15:1-4)
• fulfilled promises to the fathers (Acts 13:33)
• set us free from the law of sin and death (Rom
8:2, 6:22)
• given a name above every name (Phil 2:9)
• Jesus is the resurrection & the life (John 11:25)
• the Christian hope (Acts 24:15, 26:6-8, Rom 8:24)

Res-2
1Corinthinans 15:20
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead,
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep
Points:
1. Stated to be a FACT!
2. “first fruits” = initial, primary, the best; given as an offering
to God (cf. Gen 49:3, Ex 23:16,19, Lev 23:10,17,19)
3. “fallen asleep” = died (in the hope of the resurrection)
Application:
1. A resurrected Jesus is the pivotal point of Bible Christianity
2. We expect to be among those raised “at his coming” (15:23)
10
Res-3 Acts 2:24
But God raised him up, having loosed the
pangs of death, because it was not possible
for him to be held by it.
Points:
1. Simple but key teaching: God raised Jesus, who was dead.
2. Law of sin and death: the soul that sins shall die (Ezek 18:4,20)
3. Jesus did not sin (Heb 4:15) yet he died (Jn 19:30, 33); since he
wasn’t like Rom5:12 men, some further action had to happen
4. Man + sin = death; man Jesus + sinless = death + resurrection
Application:
For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die
again; death no longer has dominion over him…So you also must
consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus
(Rom 6:9,11).

Res-4
1Corinthians 15:1-4
Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I
preached to you the gospel, which you received, in
which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold
it fast--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to
you as of first importance what I also received, that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the
scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on
the third day in accordance with the scriptures…
Points:
1. “first importance” = primary, fundamental priority teaching
2. “in accordance” {twice} = fulfilled Bible prophecy, down to
the detail of “the third day” (cf. Jonah 1:17, Matt 12:40)
Application:
Our salvation depends on a crucified and risen Jesus (1Cor 15:17)
12
Res-5
Acts 13:33
And we bring you the good news that what God
promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to
us their children by raising Jesus…
Points:
1. Another fulfilled prophecy regarding Jesus’ resurrection
2. “to the fathers” = reference to Abraham and David (cf. Matt 1:1)
3. God’s promise to Abraham about a “seed” or offspring dealt
specifically with resurrection (Gen 22:18, Gal 3:18, Heb 11:19);
David also foresaw the resurrection (2Sam 7:12-19, Acts 2:31)
Application:
Those who have the faith of Abraham are “fully convinced that God
will do what he has promised” (Rom 4:21), namely raising them to
eternal life to enjoy the promised earth (Gal 3:29, Heb 11:13-16)
13
Res-6
Romans 8:2, 6:22
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me
free from the law of sin and death … But now that you have
been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the
return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life.
Points:
1. “law of sin and death” = sinners must die (see earlier slide)
2. When believers obey the gospel call and standard of teaching in
Christ, they are “set free from sin” to serve God (Rom 6:17-18)
3. Jesus also redeemed Jewish believers from “the curse of the law”
of Moses, for sanctification (Gal 3:10-14, Heb 9:13-15, 10:1-14)
Application:
Contrast the outcome of Christ’s obedience vs. the sin of Adam:
“If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much
more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of
righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Rom 5:17)
14
Res-7
Philippians 2:9
Therefore God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name which
is above every name,…
Points:
1. Context: “became obedient unto death … on a cross” (v.8)
2. Because of Jesus’ humble mindset and taking on a servant’s role,
God exalted the name of Jesus, e.g., called: Son, King of kings
3. Such exaltation occurred in conjunction with his resurrection
Application:
1. A disciple is expected to “bear his own cross” (Lk 16:27)
2. Those who faithfully follow will share the suffering & glory,
knowing the power of the resurrection (Phil 3:7-11)
15
Res-8
John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection
and the life; he who believes in me,
though he die, yet shall he live…
Points:
1. This said before Jesus himself died and was raised by God
2. Jesus thus had total confidence in his Father (cf John 10:18)
= he had faith that God would make him alive again (cf. us!)
3. “and the life” indicates immortality distinct from resurrection
Application:
1. Both the just & unjust are resurrected (Acts 24:15, Dan 12:2)
2. Only the faithful are given eternal life (Matt 25:48)
16
Res-9
Acts 24:15, 26:6-8
…having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that
there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust….
And now I stand here on trial for hope in the promise made
by God to our fathers, to which our twelve tribes hope to
attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this
hope I am accused by Jews, O king! Why is it thought
incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?
Points:
1. “hope in God” = “hope in promise” = “hope to attain”
2. hope of resurrection was key to the faith of Abraham and David,
“fathers” of Israel (Heb 11:9, John 8:56, Acts 2:25-35)
Application:
As it was for Abraham, “it will be reckoned to us who believe in
him that raised from the dead Jesus our Lord” (Rom 4:24,11-12)
17
Res-10
Acts 28:20, Romans 8:24
For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and
speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel
that I am bound with this chain
…as we wait for the adoption as sons, the redemption of
our bodies. For in this hope we were saved.
Points:
1. “the hope of Israel” = hope of the resurrection (Acts 26:6)
2. Paul’s preaching integrated the gospel of the Kingdom of God
with the fact of the resurrected Jesus (Acts 28:23,31)
3. “this hope” = belief in risen Lord has past and future aspects
Application:
1. The Christian hope is eternal life on a new earth, with Jesus
2. That hope becomes reality only at Christ’s return, not before
18

Philippians 3
7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of
Christ.
8 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the
surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his
sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them
as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my
own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ,
the righteousness from God that depends on faith;
10 that I may know him and the power of his
resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like
him in his death,
11 that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the
dead.

Died on cross
Drawings by Richard Hook
13 For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and
with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the
living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those
who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has
occurred which redeems them from the transgressions under the first
covenant. (Hebrews 9)

44 Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was
still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the
prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then he opened their minds to
understand the scriptures, 46 and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ
should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead… (Luke 24)
Specific example
39 But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign;
but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as
Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son
of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12)
32 Supplemental Reference Material #8
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had
received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, 18 of whom it was
said, "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." 19 He considered that
God was able to raise men even from the dead; hence, figuratively speaking,
he did receive him back. (Hebrews 11)
33 Supplemental Reference Material #9
30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to
him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, 31 he [David]
foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not
abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised
up, and of that we all are witnesses. (Acts 2)
34 Supplemental Reference Material #10
A believer has assurance of ‘eternal life’ per God’s promise (e.g. 1Jn 5:13), but will not
actually obtain the spiritual body until after the resurrection/judgment (cf. 1Cor 15:51-53)
