The Rizal Shrine in Calamba
 Rizal’s house in Calamba is a combination of FILIPINO-SPANISH colonial
style.
 Architect JUAN NAKPIL volunteered his self in rebuilding and restoration of
the historical house.
 Executive Order 145 by President Elpidio Quirino approved the
reconstruction and inauguration of the house as RIZAL SHRINE.
 Rizal’s family came from Biñan, Laguna:
CULTIVATION OF LAND + BOUNTIFUL HARVEST = Rizal’s father
Francisco became one of the town’s wealthiest men and became DON
FRANCISCO MERCADO.

 Parents: Lorenzo Alonso and Brigida de Quintos.
 She was a remarkable woman, possessing refined culture,
literary talent, business ability, and the fortitude of
Spartan women.
 Died on August 16, 1911 at the age of 85

1. Saturnino Rizal Hidalgo (1850-1913) – NENENG; Oldest of the Rizal children.
2. Paciano Rizal (1851-1930) – Only brother of Rizal and his confidant after his
brother execution, hejoined the Philippine Revolution and became combat
general.
3. Narcisa Rizal Lopez (1852-1939) – SISA; wife of Antonio Lopez, a school
teacher of Morong.
4. Olimpia Rizal Ubaldo (1855-1887) – YPIA; wife of Silvestre Ubaldo, a
telegraph operator from Manila. The PRETTIEST among her sisters.
5. Lucia Rizal Herbosa (1857-1919) – wife of Mariano Herbosa of Calamba, who
was a nephew of Father Casanas. Herbosa died of Cholera in 1889 and was
denied Christian burial because he was the brother – law - of Rizal.
6. Maria Rizal Cruz (1859-1945) – BIANG; wife of Daniel Faustino Cruz. She was
the grand-mother of Gemma-Cruz Araneta, former Miss International.
7. Jose Rizal (1861-1896) – PEPE; Our Filipino Hero. During
his exile in Dapitan he lived with Josephen Bracken, Irish girl
from Hong Kong.
8. Concepcion Rizal (1862-1865) – CONCHA; She died of
sickness at the age of 3. her death was Rizal’s first sorrow in
life.
9. Josefa Rizal (1865-1945) – PANGGOY; She died an old maid
at the age of 80.
10. Trinidad Rizal (1868-1951) – TRINING; She died an old
maid at the age of 83.
11. Solidad Rizal Quintero (1870-1929) – CHOLENG; The
youngest of the Rizal children.
