In one sentence that synthesizes your learning from reading this module, listening to the online class discussion, and the making of the
study guide above, explain the purpose of RA 1425. (5 pts)
Based on my learning the purpose of the RA 1425 is to recognize and acknowledge the life and works of Jose Rizal which has
a big contribution to the Philippines and also to preserve the history or past by teaching it to all colleges and universities.

Is the Rizal Law relevant in present times? If yes, discuss its immediate relevance to your life as a student and citizen of the
Philippines, if not, discuss at least two reasons why you think it no longer serves a relevant purpose. (10 pts)
It is still relevant in present times in order for it to be preserved and to pass it from generation to generation. As a student and
a citizen of the Philippines by studying the rizal’s life it will help me to expand my knowledge and develop my personal identity by
knowing the history and the situations before. This act will serve as an eye opener to every Filipino that we must be more careful and
knowledgeable for us not be colonized again by other countries.

II. Read the following excerpts from the statements of the legislators who supported and opposed the passage of the Rizal Law in
1956. Then, answer the questions that follow. (15 points)

“Nole me Tangere and El Filibusterismo must be read by all Filipinos. They must be taken to heart, for in their pages
we see ourselves as in a mirror, our defects as well as our strength, our virtues as well as our voices. Only then would
be become conscious as a people and so learn to prepare ourselves for painful sacrifices that ultimately lead to self-
reliance, relf-respect, and freedom.”
Senator Jose P. Laurel
“Rizal did not pretend to teach religion when he wrote those books. He aimed at inculcating civic consciousness in the
Filipinos, national dignity, personal pride, and patriotism and if references were made by him in the course of his
narration to certain religious practices in the Philippines in those days, and to the conduct and behaviour of erring
ministers of the church, it was because he portrayed faithfully the general situation in the Philippines as it then
existed.”
Senator Claro M. Recto

“A vast majority of our people are, at the same time, Catholic and Filipino citizens. As such, they have two great loves:
their country and their faith. These two loves are not conflicting loves. They are harmonious affections, like the love fir his
father and for his mother.
This is the basis of my stand. Let us not create a conflict between nationalism and religion, between the government and
the church”.
Senator Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo

Questions
1. What was the major argument raised by Senator Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo against the passage by the Rizal bill? (5 pts)
His stand and argument for the Rizal bill was that the majority of the people here in the Philippine are Filipinos and
catholic so that in order for the state and church to not have conflict the Rizal bill should not be implemented. He also stated that the
government and the church should not create conflict between nationalism and religion because of the Rizal law.
2. What was the major argument raised by Senators Jose P. Laurel and Claro M. Recto in support of the passage of the Rizal
Bill? ( 5 pts)
The major argument and their stand about the Rizal bill was that rizal did not wrote those books to create conflict
but instead he used the opportunity to open the eyes of every Filipino so that we, people of the Philippines must be aware and
learn how to prepare ourselves for future purposes. The stand of senator Jose Laurel as well as senator Claro M. Recto was to
encourage the Filipinos to read the books of Jose Rizal which are the Nole me Tangere and El filibusterismo to inform and educate
the people of Philippines about the situation and the practices before in order for us to open our eyes.

3. Are there points of convergence between the supporters and opposes of the Rizal Bill based on these statements? (5 pts)
Based on the statements given by both senators, I couldn't find any convergence points between them. Senator
Laurel which is one of the supporters of this law is clearly wants to promote and be implemented the Rizal law. On the
other hand, the opposed Senator Rodrigo wants to clear the purpose of having this law on this country and stated that this
law is unnecessary and not that much important when it comes to development of its citizen.
