EXPERIMENT TITLE
INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS AND DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION,
RECCOMENDATION
Experiment: [Spectra]
■ Materials:
– Prism
– Sheet of paper
– Laser pointer
■ Methods:
1. Expose the prism to sunlight until it shows a rainbow.
2. Observe the rainbow produced by the prism.
3. Shine the light of the laser pointer on the prism.
4. Observe what happens to the light of the laser pointer as it passes through the
prism
Experiment: [Spectra]
■ Results and Discussion
– Illustrate your results
– Guide questions:
1. Describe your observations with the procedure when you shone sunlight
through the prism.
2. Explain how the sunlight produces a rainbow.
3. Describe your observations with the procedure when you shone the laser
pointer through the prism.
4. Compare, contrast, and explain the reason why the laser pointer produces
such light?

POP QUIZ [October 9, 2019]
■ ON THE SHEET OF PAPER
■ WRITE YOUR ASSIGNMENT LAST MEETING.
■ USE THE FOLLOWING WORDS OR PHRASES TO CONSTRUCT A MEANINGFUL
PARAGRAPH ABOUT SPECTRA. THE PARAGRAPH NEEDS TO BE 30 WORDS OR
MORE.
– Spectra
– White light
– Laser light

MAGNETISM
MAGNETS
■ Magnets repel and attract other magnets, and
attract magnetic substances.
– Permanent magnets
■ magnetic ALL THE TIME
– Electromagnets
■ INDUCED magnetic properties
MAGNETS—permanent

Opposite (unlike) poles attract, and like poles repel.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU CUT THE MAGNET IN HALF?

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU REPEATEDLY DROP THE MAGNET?

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU REPEATEDLY DROP THE MAGNET?

the strength of their magnetic field is reduced

DEMAGNETISATION
converting a magnet to a non-magnet
CAN YOU MAKE A NON-MAGNETIC MATERIAL MAGNETIC?

INDUCED MAGNETISM

SOME MATERIALS CAN ACT AS A

MAGNET—ONLY WHILST IN THE
MAGNETIC FIELD
Magnetic materials

■ Iron, nickel, and cobalt

– Pure metals that can be turned into a permanent
magnet

Substances that can be permanently

magnetised are described as magnetically hard.
These are often alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt.
Magnetic materials

■ Iron, nickel, and cobalt

– Pure metals that can be turned into a permanent
magnet

Substances that can only be temporarily magnetised are

described as magnetically soft. Alloys with less iron, nickel
or cobalt will be magnetically soft and have a weaker
magnetic field.
TRIVIA

■ Alloys of iron are called

ferrous and those without
iron are called non-
ferrous.
MAGNETIC FIELD LINES

■ Represent the magnetic force on a magnet
