Collecting and Organizing Data

Now, you know the uses and misuses of

statistics. In this lesson, you will learn how
to collect, organize, and summarize the
data set in tables, graphs, and diagrams.
Group Activity: Baby Boom!
Do you know in what month most babies are born?
Let’s do a mini survey in your class.
Popular Birth Months
Month Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec

Number
of
students

• In which month were most students in class born?

• In which month were the least number of students
in the class born?
• What can you infer from the data?
Table – a systematic arrangement of data usually
arranged in rows or columns for ready reference of
information.
A table has a title and appropriate headings for the
columns and rows.
Stem and leaf display- is a method of organizing data
in which the stem values or the leading digit(s) for
each observation are listed in a column and the leaf
values or the trailing digit(s) for each observation is
then listed beside the corresponding stem.
Example: Marco’s travel time from school to his house varies
daily due to traffic and other factors. He records his daily
travel time in minutes for 20 days as follows:
25 32 18 26 40
20 31 21 34 28
19 36 25 38 41
40 23 22 30 31
Solution: stem leaf

56 45 65 28 32
60 44 64 20 38
34 45 56 53 35
35 50 60 28 41
Answer: stem leaf

4 1, 4, 5, 5
5 0, 3, 6, 6, 8
6 0, 0, 4, 4, 5
Example: The following back-to-back stem and leaf
diagram represents the scores of the students in two
different section for a common examination. In each
section, 30 students took the examination.

a. Which section got the highest score? What was the score?
b. Which section got the lowest score? What was the score?
c. How would you decide which class did better in the exam?
Activity 1. Title: Stem and Leaf
Gather data of weight of your classmates and
construct a stem and leaf diagram. For boys, gather
data for boys and same for girls, data for girls.

Activity 2. Title: Back-to-back stem and leaf

Gather data of weight of your classmates and
construct a back-to-back stem and leaf diagram. On
the left part for boys and for the right part for girls.
Graphs
Group Activity with individual output: Gather data
from the assigned grade and section and construct a
pictograph on age and places.

Activity 1: Pictograph on age of assigned section.

Activity 2: Pictograph of places of assigned section.
Bar graph – uses bars of different lengths and of equal
widths to show the frequencies for each of several
categories.

Activity 3 Bar graph on ages of assigned section

Activity 4 Bar graph on assigned section
Group activity with individual output: Gather data
from the assigned grade and section on
age/weight/and places.

Activity A Complete the following table.

Ages of (assigned section)

Ages Tally Number of students

Weight of (assigned section)

weight Tally Number of students

Places of (assigned section)

Places Tally Number of students

Pie Charts – shows the division of a whole into its
parts. It is often used by establishments, government
agencies, and the media to convey information on
different categories, like science, as shown below, on
the allocation of the budget, on expenditures, etc.
Group Activity with individual output: Gather data
from the assigned grade and section and construct a
pie graph on age/weight/and places.

Activity 5 Pie graph on ages of assigned section

Activity 6 Pie graph on places of assigned section
By deleting the rectangles in the first figure, we obtain
the final histogram. Note that the height of each bar is
the frequency of the class interval. Each bar starts with
the lower limit of the interval and extends to the upper
limit.
Line graph
Is the most suitable when we want to show the
rising and falling trend of a set of data over a period
of time.

The horizontal line shows the categories being

considered. The vertical line indicates frequency.
