Leyte

 is a province in the Philippines located in the eastern Visayas region, occupying


the northern three borders Leyte Island. It’s capital is the city of Tacloban. Leyte
is situated west of Samar Island, North of Southern Leyte and South Biliran. To the
west of Leyte across the Camotes Sea is the Province of Cebu.

 Leyte is also known the site of largest naval battle in modern history, the
battle of Leyte Gulf, which took place during the second World War.
 On November 8 2013, the province was severely affected by Super Typhoon
Yolanda (Haiyan), Killing thousands of people, having previously suffered
similar destruction and loss of life in 1991 during tropical storms Thelma.
Waray People
 Are a Subgroup of the Visayan People whose primary language is the Waray
Language (Leineyte-samarnon), an Astronesian Language native to the Island
of Samar, Leyte and Biliran which together comprise the eastern VISAYAS
Region of the PHILIPPINES Waray People inhabit the whole Island of Samar
where they are called Samarenyos/ Samarnons, the northern part of the
island of Leyte where they are Leytenyos, and the island of Biliran. On Leyte
Island, the Waray people occupy the Northern part of the island, separated
from the Cebuano Language, speaking Leytenyos, by a mountain range in the
middle of the Island.
 Waray is the fifth-most spoken native regional language of the Philippines,
native to Eastern Visayas . It is the native language of the Waray People and
some Cebuano-speaking people of Eastern and Southern parts of Leyte Island.
It is the 3rd most spoken Language among the Visayan Languages.
 The Total population of Waray-People is 4.05% of the Philippine Population.
Religion in Leyte

 According to statistics, 97-98% of Leyte’s population are Roman Catholics


while the remaining are protestants of various Denomination either adherents
of the non-trinitarian sect Iglesia ni Cristo, Mormons, Baptist, Menonites and
others. Being a predominantly Roman-Catholic- mority province, every town
and cities has its own Roman Catholic Churches and every barangay n every
towns and province also has its own Roman Catholic chapels. Catholic
religious festivals like celebrating saints feast days are observed throughout
the year.
Fesivals in Leyte
 Pintados- Kasadyaan Festival June 27
This festival is very popular that it draws lots of attention from foreign and local tourist alike.
With Tacloban City its focal point, this events aims to commemorate folk beliefs, epics as well as
colorful traditions of the native people in the province. The festivals offer bodies with colorful paints,
cultural presentation, bazaars.
 Buyogan Festival
Held every 19th is highly attractive festival, the local government would organizes this to
celebrate the founding anniversary, highlighting local resident wearing colorful clothe whilst dancing,
make ups and actually resembles like a bee, the choreography mimics the movement and behavior of
the honey bee.
 Sangyaw festival
Organized every June in Tacloban City, the dancers would make their make ups in the resemblance
of different flowers.
 Alikaraw Festival
Held in the municipatity of Hilango Povince, it commemorates the ritual of a local tribe in Leyte.
Celebration of resources, which boast pristine forest and beautiful orchids.
 Pasaka Festival
Celebrated every August in the municipality of Tanauan, it features rich heritage,
colorful tradition, strong beliefs. The major highlight is the drama presentation.
 Sanggutan Festival
Every 18th of May in the municipality of Barugo, Sanggutan is the major
attraction in the province of Leyte, local residents support the festival by
remembering the ancient methods of Coconut wine processing in Barugo the festival
dance competition would base their choreography in how to make a wine.
 Lubi-Lubi Festival
Held every 15th day of August in the municipality of Calubian. The major
highlight is the cultural presentations, and the local residents portrays how to care
coconut trees.

Economy of Leyte

 The economic of Leyte depend in agriculture. Rice is farmed in the lower


flatter areas specifically those around Tacloban, while coconut farming, for
the coconut oil is the main cash crop, fishing is also a major source of
livelihood among the residents.
 Although economically backward, the province is the site of the largest
geothermal plant in a Asia, making it one of the resource-rich provinces of the
Philippines.
Leyte Livelihood

 A wide variety of crops are planted throughout the arable lands, but the most
in demand are rice, corn, abaca, tobacco and coconuts. Other foods that have
become staple crops include bananas, cassava, gabi and potatoes. Tacloban is
known as a center for the production of export quality abaca. Sugar
production is also increasing and being distributed in various parts of the
country.

 Tatoo as artwork
 16th century Chinese artwork on the “ Pintados”. Leyte Island was then
inhabited by people with tattoo-coverd bodies. Modern day Leytenos dress up
for annual Pintados Festival.
 Dance imitates Life
 The tinikling dance, which originated from Leyte, used to be the Philippines
National Dance. The dance imitates movement of tikling bird. Tinikling is the
most popular Filipino dance in the world.
