Newton’s Law of

Universal Gravitation
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

Gravitational force between objects

depends on two factors:
 their masses
 the distance between their centers
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

 The greater the mass of the objects the

greater is the force of attraction
between them.
 The force of attraction between
objects is directly proportional to the
product of their masses
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

 The greater the distance between

them, the less is the force of attraction
 The force is inversely proportional to the
square of the distance between the
bodies
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

Any two bodies in the universe attract

each other with a force which varies
directly as the product of their masses
and inversely proportional as the square
of the distance between them
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

F= G m₁m₂/d₂
G= Fd₂/m₁m₂
m= mass
d= distance
F= force
G= gravitational constant = 6.673 x 10⁻¹¹ N m²/ kg²
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

each other with a force which varies
directly as the product of their masses
and inversely proportional as the square
of the distance between them
