Lectionary
Sacramentary
Gospel Book, Book of Gospels or
Evagelion
Contains only the Gospel readings; used on
solemn occasions and is carried by the deacon,
or in his absence, the reader. Portions of the
Gospels are read from here and used in the mass
and other services, arranged according to the
order of the liturgical calendar.
Hymnal or Missallete
Contains all parts of the Mass for a specific
season in the liturgical year, including
instructions on when to stand, sit, or
kneel.
Missal
It is a liturgical book containing all
instructions and texts necessary for the
celebration of the Mass throughout the
year.
Lectionary
Contains scripture readings for the mass. It is
composed of the readings and the responsorial
psalm assigned for each Mass of the year
(Sundays, weekdays, and special occasions).
Sacramentary
Contains the opening prayer, prayer over the
gifts, prayer after communion, and solemn
blessings, Eucharistic prayers and prefaces for all
of the Masses, including special occasions. It
does not contain readings for the Mass.

Chalice
A large cup used to hold the wine that
becomes the Blood of Christ.
Paten
a saucer-like disk that holds the bread
that becomes the Body of Christ.
Ciborium
Used to hold the Hosts which will be used for
communion; used to reserve the Blessed
Sacrament in the tabernacle.
Decanter/Flagon/Cruets
Used to hold the wine and water which
will be consecrated at Mass.
Communion Cups
used at communion when the people
receive from the cup;
Pall
The stiff, square, white cover that is placed over
the paten when it is on the chalice.
Purificator
A white cloth used to cleanse(purify) the
chalice. It usually has a cross embroidered on
it.
Corporal
is a square white linen cloth upon which
the chalice, paten, and ciborium are
placed during the celebration of the Mass.
Thurible(Censer/Incense
Buner)
A metal censer suspended from
chains, in which incense is
burned during worship.
Lavabo
Used to wash the hands of the priest and
accompanying ministers for the giving of
communion.
monstrance
A transparent receptacle in which the consecrated Host is
exposed for veneration.
