Religion in the Pre-Colonial Philippines
• Religion has often been an important part of
defining the identity of inhabitants of the
Philippines. Before the arrival of foreign
religions from the West, such as Christianity
and Islam, the predominant religious system in
the Philippine archipelago was a type of
“Animism”.
Animism
• The beliefs that all natural things, such as plants,
animals, rocks, and thunder, have spirits and can
influence human events.
• Is the doctrine that every natural thing in the
universe has a soul.
Religious Beliefs
• Diseases were thought to be caused by the temper of the
environmental spirits.
• Filipinos also venerated the dead by keeping alive their
memory by carving idols of stones, gold or ivory called
“likha” or “larawan”;food, wine and other things were
also shared with the dead.
