Forming the
Plural of
Nouns
Most nouns form
1.)
their plural by adding -s
Examples:
nation – nations
school - schools
2.) For nouns that end in
s,ss,ch, and x add es.
Examples:

gas – gases dish – dishes


glass – glasses coach – coaches
box - boxes
3.) For nouns that end in y
preceded by consonant,
change y to i and add - es
Examples:

Pony – ponies
Sky - skies
4.) For nouns that end
in y preceded by a
vowel, simply add - s
Examples:

monkey-monkeys
joy-joys
5. For some nouns ending
in o, add only - s
Examples:
photo – photos
For some, add es
Hero – heroes
mango- mangoes
tomato- tomatoes
6. For nouns ending in f
or fe, change f or fe to v
and add es
Examples: shelf – shelves knife – knives

There are few exceptions. Some merely add s


roof – roofs
belief – beliefs
dwarf – dwarfs
safe - safes
7. There are a few common
and highly irregular plurals.
Examples:

ox – oxen man – men


child- children tooth – teeth
woman - women
