FORCES

A force is a “push” or a “pull”. Some common examples:

___ ________ (drag) – acts against anything

________ – pulls things moving through air
downwards

_____ – acts against anything moving

Words – air resistance, friction, gravity

 A force is a ………….. or a …………….

 Forces are measured in ……………….

 …………………….. is an example of a contact

force.

 The force exerted by gravity on an object is a

…………………… force and this type of force is
exerted by means of force …………..

 A force is a PUSH or a PULL

 Forces are measured in NEWTONS

 FRICTION is an example of a contact force.

 The force exerted by gravity on an object is a

NON – CONTACT force and this type of force is
exerted by means of force FIELDS

 We call the force exerted by the Earth on a

object its WEIGHT
The MASS of an object is a measure of how much “stuff” (atoms) it contains
(measured in kg). It does not depend on where you are.
The WEIGHT of an object is the amount of downwards gravitational pull on it. It
depends on what planet you are on.

This object has a MASS of 1kg…

…and a WEIGHT of 10N (on Earth)

 The Earth’s gravitational field strength is 10 N/kg
(Mars = 3.8 N/kg Moon = 1.6 N/kg)
The weight of an object and its mass are linked by the
equation:
weight (N) = mass (kg) x Earth’s gravitational
field strength (N/kg)

1. An object on the Earth’s surface has a mass of 30 kg.

What is its weight?

2. What is the mass of 3 different space suit’s that

weigh…
A) 450N on earth B) 450N on the moon C) 450N on Mars
 The Earth’s gravitational field strength is 10 N/kg
(Mars g = 3.8 N/kg Moon = 1.6 N/kg)
The weight of an object and its mass are linked by the
equation:
weight (N) = mass (kg) x Earth’s gravitational
field strength (N/kg)

getting SLOWER. STATIONARY

18/02/2020
 An object remains stationary if the sum of the
forces acting upon it (resultant force) = 0
 A moving object with a 0 resultant force
keeps moving at the same speed and in the
same direction.
 If the resultant force acting on an object is
not zero;
- a stationary object begins to accelerate in the
same direction as the force.
- A moving object speeds up, slows down or
changes direction.
